Gararge recons perm white smoke is head gasket , but its only puffa atm.

White smoke

Hi Darwin

Get a Co2 test done it will tell you if you have exhaust gases in the cooling system.

Or have you got any "mayonaise" in the oil filler cap or on the dipstick. if so it suggests that you are getting coolant in the oil and that is generally the head gasket.

I looked at the oil , its as black as can be , no mayo.

white smoke is water, lote is head gasket. you gotta think where water can get into the exhaust, and really head gasket is it really. it must be a fairly small hole from water gallery to a cylinder. it will of course get worse, and then ...mayo. get some k seal or something first. follow the instructions and you should be ok if it is small still. quite a good product, but you cant use antifreeze in the cooling system.

its not constant only a puff , same time as the missfire

in that case, it is certainly the gasket. get some k-seal and see what happens. will either fix it or it wont. but to be honest, ohv engines dont disturb the timing when you whip the head off. do it yourself... the head bolts may well be re-useable and the gasket about £30 so a cheap weekend fix. just get the head skimmed aswell as crack checked.

White smoke, can often be a sign of porous fuel lines sucking in air, this is a common issue on older Terranos far more so than head gaskets.

head gasket, a cheap weekend fix!,jesus christ. and how many weekends if you have to send the head away to be skimmed and wait for it to come back. And re-using head bolts is normally a cardinal sin.

I reckon its not the headgasket and cannot understand anyone saying that it is on the facts supplied !

i may be wrong, but hey all my experience is from landy's and petrol jap/euro cars. and yes, i know a firm that i can give a head to and they skim it in house with a day turnover.
head bolts can be used if they are not stretch bolts. and if they are still within there length tolerence. i said they may well be as they can definitely be re-used on even new td5 engines.

Still runs ok at lower revs but as soon as the turbo spools it gets noisy and bangs and smokes

I recon I might have a split hose that opens up under load.

Filled it up with Injector cleaner , thought it might be worth a try

Also check intercooler for any cracks or damage .
How long has it been acting like this ? Would be a bit of a bugger stripping the head off if you have filled up with contaminated fuel and there's water in the fuel tank.
Matt.

if any turbo related hoses are to blame, if you remove the hose from turbo to inlet manifold you can eliminate them from the equation as the car will be normally aspirated. if then when you rev it, it still has white smoke you will know where it is not and move onto next avenue to look at. check your inlet gasket too.
are you losing water from expansion tank? check the level and then drive it and check again afterwards. if it is small leak in gasket you can maybe just keep driving it with a top up between drives.
if you have an air leak into the fuel line you may well be running much hotter than normal as the mix is leaner. (check your temp guage).
i hope it is not your head gasket, you might be lucky

Not losing water and no sludgy oil

Possibly a bit hotter but then it is warmer ...

did find a broken exhaust just to add to my woes (prob not related)

£101.00 National Tyres... Rear resonator box ? , cherry bomb looking thing

Yes I know it a rip but its my only working damn Vehicle at the moment and they can fix it in the morning , else I have to get one of ebay and bugger around.

Ok , new exhaust fitted and the problem has def improved , cant really tell if it has gone altogether because I havent driven far.

It might of course be the injector cleaner I put in there ...

the new exhaust will have steadied the backpressure and maybe its all tied in with the egr valve(if you have one),turbo boost etc,i am not sure how and will remain confused but the interesting thing here is back pressure i think so some of the terrano`s with this misfire/smoke which includes me (only bloody sometimes now )might just need to concentrate on the airflow circuit/pipes/valves.mine has got me so frustrated i am driving something else(omega MV6 2.6 AUTO) which is nice but i honestly think i prefer clattering about in the truck .

It would be very unusual for it to be the head.....still waiting for somone say they've actually had such a thing happen.

Common as muck occurrence on those L**d R***r engines of course but remember mobybone this is the same block and head fitted to earlier London taxis and therefore doing astronomical mileages (500-600k) without major issues. In fact there are now companies offering to convert this same engine over to spark ignition (and I think LPG, can't recall exactly) for about five grand....they normally outlast the vehicle from what I can see. :thumbs
