Hi All,

Can anyone help me out with this?

I have a 2005 2.7tdi LWB T2, tonight when reversing it into the drive with full lock onto the right there is a LOUD grinding noise coming from under the car... so much so I thought the exhaust had fallen of onto the road!!!
Go forwards - noise stops, go backwards in a straight line, no noise.... backwards with full lock noise starts again!!!

Its not the anti-roll bars banging, and Ive looked underneath the car and cant see anything out of place?????

I thought it might be the back brakes binding, but its only when full lock is on?

Any help greatly appreciated!

Cheers

2 things spring to mind 1st it might be the exhaust catching the floor or chassis where it go's over the rear axle. 2nd it might be your lock stops grinding as it's very common when you are on full lock but a drop of grease on them soon fixes it:thumb2

Cheers gents, def not the lock stops though - I greased them up over the pit last weekend as I've had that problem in my old 2001 Terrano and on a Navara (seems to be a Nissan thing!!)

The sound is like something scraping/ dragging along the road

a PIT.. lucky ... i just send the kids...

maybe worth if you risk it, be in the pit and look as some one drives back over...

but be carfull!!!!

ha ha... the pit aint mine - its the father-in-law's. Luckly enough he is a HGV/Agricultural Mechanic with his own workshop/garage, so does most of the work on the T2's.... unluckly he is on holiday at the moment!!!! :doh

Might have to get the missus to lay on the drive whilst I reverse over her!!!! :lol :lol :lol

that sounds like a better plan!!

Have you changed oil in lsd in rear ,could be sticking.

The first step would be to jack the front up off the ground and rotate the wheels in hard lock by hand and see if it makes the noise.

If no noise then start working your way back looking for anything catching when the noise is made.
I guess it's a case of working back slowly trying ever combination to trace the noise

Well, cars been over the pit and noise has been tracked down to either the rear diff, or propshaft! :doh Still grating in reverse under load!!

Luckly the car is still in warrentry (bought 2 weeks ago from The CarPeople) so its going back to them, soon as there service manager decides to ring me back!!!
I suspect that when they serviced it, well - steam cleaned the engine, they aint checked the LSD oils, or someone's been running it round in 4WD on normal roads (when I took it for a test drive it was in 4WD - sales guy said it didnt matter!) :nenau - muppet... but they can sort it out!!!!

Along with the clutch pedal not returning fully... diesel leak from somewhere in engine bay... and a couple of other things!!!

Wouldnt mind - but didnt have this much bother with my 80k 2001 Terrano that I got rid of for this one... this has only got 19k on it!!!!! :(

I wonder if someone has put norm oil in the rear diff instead of LSD oil:rolleyes:well thats if it's been touched:augie

Well, after FOURTEEN DAYS at the Car People (they said it would only take a day) I have been today to collect the car...

Less then 30k on the car and so far they have....

1) Replaced the front wheel bearings
2) Replaced the 'front axel bars' :nenau
3) Sent the car away to a deisel specialist as it was leaking from the injectors - they didnt pick up in the service the engine bay was covered in diesel!!!
4) Adjusted the clutch as the pedal was not travelling all the way back

Bearing in mind they have had the car 14 days (half of the time I have owned it) driving it back the clutch was slipping in 3rd, 4th and 5th - great fun on the M1 when you cant accelerate to go over 40mph!!! :doh

Car straight back to Car People who have now adjusted the clutch back to how it was before it went in and have ordered a new spring, which I will have to AGAIN drive the 60 mile round trip for them to fit!!!
I've also been told to 'see how I get on' with the grinding as they 'think' they have sorted it out :( :( :(

This from a company that prides itself on being HASSEL FREE!!! And carried out a 'comprehensive check' of the car before I bought it!

To be honest im thinking about demanding my money back as the car is not 'fit for purpose' and hunting around for another T2! :banghead

BB I reckon either you've been unlucky or this motor has done a bit more than the speedo says....have you looked at previous owners and thought about asking them about mileage?

I know cars go wrong but I'm on my third Terrano/Mav - first one was a brand new S-plate Maverick 2.7 TDi which did arounnd 60k miles, second was a brand new W-plate T2 2.7TDi automatic which my wife now runs and which has >160k miles on it, and I recently bought my third, on 02-plate T2.

But on those first two cars, which have been subjected to all sorts of abuse, including some offroading and hauling a spectacularly heavy twin-axle box trailer to the South of France several times, heres what I can tell you after a cumulative 220k miles in them...

1. I've never had front wheel bearings go. Only bearing failure I ever had was a rear-wheel one at about 80k miles which was a metal fault (it broke up without warning and f***ed the half-shaft).

2. I've never had any noise or tyre-scrubbing from the rear axle, so I'd suggest that any problem of that kind that people observe is almost certainly a fault and not a characteristic of the vehicle. Think about it, what manufacturer is going to fit systems that cause tyre scrub under normal driving conditions? Wouldn't make sense.

3. Never had any problems with auto hubs and never touched 'em.

4. Never had a MAF problem and never touched one. And thats despite all the doom-mongers who foresaw all sorts of water/dirt ingress when I fitted my K&N induction kit about 120k miles ago....

Thats not to say its been hassle-free....probably because of the heavy duty towing I did, the auto box went at around 120k miles and cost me £1500 for a rebuild. But do you know what, I'd swap my current T2 any day for the wifes battered old crate - it runs like a sewing maching and the box is an absolute delight.

Don't lose heart or give up, just find one thats been looked after and has a solid history - good luck with your search or your current car mate!

hi big black, i would'nt mind betting them muppets at car people have put the wrong oil in your diff, get them to drain it and fill with correct oil and run it for awhile and drain and refill again you might find it sorts it out. they would'nt know it had a lsd and special oil is required.

you should take it to these guys----<a href="http://plugin.smileycentral.com/http%253A%252F%252Fwww.smileycentral.com%252F%253Fpartner%253DZSzeb008%255FZSfox000%2526i%253D18%252F18%255F5%255F3%2526feat%253Dprof/page.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/18/18_5_3.gif" alt="SmileyCentral.com" border="0"><img border="0" src="http://plugin.smileycentral.com/http%253A%252F%252Fimgfarm%252Ecom%252Fimages%252Fnocache%252Ftr%252Ffw%252Fsmiley%252Fsocial%252Egif%253Fi%253D18%252F18_5_3%2526uiv%253D3.0/image.gif"></a>

I am inclined to agree with "Wrong oil in the Diff" .. I had a similar experience with mine when I bought it. The problem is they put what THEY THINK should go in the rear diff, and not what is actually supposed to be in there. I would be inclined to contact their service department and say "You do realise, of course, that the T2 has a limited slip diff, and only LSD oil should be used in there". Most of the muppets would probably suggest changing the back axle, all for the sake of changing the oil.

Cheers guys, I'll try changing the oil - any ideas which LSD oil I should use?

BTW - car has been back over the pit just to see what they have done, jacked it up to check front wheels, can get hold of the NS front wheel and rock it backwards and forwards  muppets aint tightened the bearings up right!!! Also had bent the ABS wires so they were rubbing against the inside of the wheel!!! :doh

Wont repeat what father-in-law said about their 'mechanics'!!! :augie

Also got in touch with the last owner, seems the car was supplied from new and has been serviced by them... explains alot! :lol

Hay Im getting as bit good at this helping lark!!

i beter go back to waffling me thinks

Tend to agree with those suggesting the rear difff oil, mine was behaving similar, changed the rear diff oil and problem gone
