After my day off road I now want more!!!

So whats the cheapest way to get greater ground clearance is it just a matter of bigger wheels??

I would also like some accessories like rock/tree sliders and a sun visor (like mav's) I know its not going to give me better off-roading but it looks good. 8)

I was shocked 8O to be honest of the mavericks ability and for that mine 8O

humminbird got some lwb springs for back of his gave him bit more lift cheaply!

For more clearance you really need more air under the diffs and that means bigger tyres. To fit anything bigger than 31" tyres you'll need to think about lifting it. The LWB springs in the back trick helps with the approach, depart and breakover angles but they're pretty good on a SWB anyway so really its bigger tyres that you need.

What wheels and tyres could I get to fit with the standard set up as is?

Can you get things like axle protectors??

I have been thinking of fitting the LWB springs to mine as it won't cost that much for a set of second hand sprigs

i did find fella on ebay trying to get into building stuff from steel for landy owners i contacted him to see if hed do stuff for nissan he was keen to gain foothold so said yes ,what he wanted was to borrow vehicle to measure an fit to,pick your brains on what owners wanted what would be good sellers any prototypes were yours for helping him out, have search back through posts i may have put it in ebay section good few months gone now though!

Biggest tyres that can be fitted to a fairly standard truck are 31" a few people have got em, I've got 30s cos they came up at the right price.

Personally I don't think our trucks need diff guards etc. The ones for Landies are to protect the front of the front diff from hitting stuff, ours is tucked up behind cross members anyway, the standard bash plate is worth getting hold of though if your truck has lost its one. At the rear the diff is an almighty great lump of cast iron, its going to take guite a big hit to damage it. Repeated scrappings across rocks could wear through the axle casing below the diff but it would take a while - anyway they're not available anywhere (and I mean anywhere worldwide) to my knowledge.

Any guard would also loose you more clearance, I have thought about making some thin skids for the bottom wishbones but can't decide.

I just measured mine as 28's (15's with 235/75)

I will get some weller style rims, good sets in formula4.

Yes Ive got the sump guard on. I had a quick check this morning only a few minor scrapes even though it sounded much worse inside but of course it was, until yesterday, my lovely 'unmarked' car.

At the moment I have some springs you maybe alble to fit. 1 set is already earmarked for Iandouglas to try. From me they are free to collect or will bring to lane day in Dec. Can't remember measurements but Ian has them. Think they may have been 6" accross and 15 &1/2 tall?

Shockers are available from an ad on home page. ES9000 pro comp shocks - same as on my disco.

Underbody protection may have to be adapted from landy stuff or home made. I have seen underbody protection made from double alloy sheet bent and cut, not sure how effective but heck anything better than nowt.

If you can weld rock sliders can be made from box section or heavy plate reasonably easy. (I can't weld so had to pay 8O )

Diff covers are not avialable as far as I know for Nissan but I also know some members have been looking into this, maybe they will respond?

Should you go the make your own route, then make sure you bild in heavy duty recovery points front and rear, and possibly points for hi lift jack. I can explain further should you require.

In my opinion Insa tyres are currently the best off road (affordable) tyre available. Opinions on tyres will of course always vary so look around at who gets stuck and who ploughs through, and don't be afraid to ask what folks are running and why.

You may find alloy wheels nicer looking but steel a little more practical for off road use. Buckle a steely and you can hammer it out there and then. Buckle an alloy and ??

Owt else you need just ask

"robo" was gonna get some diff guards made by 4x4s r us in warwick but think he got sidetracked by ilness

Nice one, Thanks I can make, as far as I know, the dec day so yes ill have them thanks.

What do you think of monroe shocks as I can get them quite cheap??

Ive recently taken delivery of my new welder and from what ive seen dont look to difficult to make

To get 30's what do I ask/look for same size rims etc??

I was impressed by the cooper tyres I bought, obviously wasnt pushing it but still i got confidence in them as the day went on and good handling on the way home with the twisty buxton road

Ok then 2nd pair of springs for you, if you want the spec of them they are off my disco before the lift.

Any shocks as long as good, Monroe always had good name, but pro comp give Life?? guarantee and are designed for off road. Make sure you know the extra length you require, if they bottom out they break or worse, so find the length then add plus 2" or plus 3" etc or speak to specialist like David at Llama 4x4. www.llama4x4.co.uk

Also remember if lifting the vehicle you will need longer flexible brake hoses, this is not an option, again if they bottom out and break 8O 8O I use +4" stainless steel braided hoses for my 2" lift. Thats 2" for lift and 2" to spare 8O again its a saftey thing. Not cheap but can I put a price on my daughters life - or mine come to think of it and don't anybody say 2/6d (thats two shillings and sixpence in old money)

For wheels you need the same size rim and bigger tyre. www.4x4at.co.uk stock Jap fittment wheels and give club discount. Tyres are personal choice but elswhere on this forum I've said that in my opinion Insa tyres are currently the best you can buy (price wise) compare them to BFGs or Simex which are arguably the best 8O £40 to £60 per tyre compared with upwards of £100 for BFGs and much more for Simex.

I use Cooper discovery sport on my other 4x4 and they are excellant for all round use, mainly road use and occasional off road. My other 4x4 is a Mav - new shape.

I don't think landy springs if thats what you're offering Andy, wil fit. Tommo had to grind down Landy dislocation cones to get them to fit inside T2/Mav springs. I've got my old SWB springs still will measure the diameter and post it tomorrow.

On the T2/Mav you don't need longer flexies because of the way they are routed. At the back the brake lines run down the trailing links and at the front they run across the wishbones, its not like on a landy with poorly located beam axles that have barely got rid of their cart springs.

Hardly worth replying to, as I was trying to offer help to a new member wanting to better his vehicle for off road, but as usual Simon I bow to your superior technical knowledge.

What is the feeling on widening the track when lifting a vehicle, I've read somewhere (Total Off Road??) about go high, go wide, but using standard wheels is there a need for wheel spacers if rasing the suspension say, 2", and fitting some slightly larger tyres?

When I had my Navara lifted I had to put the old 'narrower' wheels back on as you may know and it was pretty slidey on the roads. Now I have the wide ones back on, aslo on rims with a greater offset, the road handeling is much better. So I would say yes to if going higher go wider too, to balance it up so to speak.
