Anyone know the best thing to glue the plastic side panels... The mountings for the clips are broken, so I need to fix them back into place, before I can put it back on the car.

I tried Super glue, does not touch it, and then tried Araldite, but it does not actually bond to it, and just comes off in one piece.

They say PP+EPM-T10 on them, but I have no idea what sort of glue would work on that.

I use double sided tape for the automotive industry, it's very good, the type used to secure your mirror to your windscreen.
The other stuff I have used is "sticks like shit" and it does:thumb2

Yep, 'sticks like shit' is good stuff :)

It's holding my rear no plate on and various other things lol

tiger seal ...... you will never get rid of it :augie:lol

MSHG

Used in and on caravans.

Its a bugger to get anything off stuck with it

Local dealer or mobile caravan will have some

I bought some super glue once, the only problem was...

I couldn't get the lid off.:lol:lol:lol

Pritt stick? Used to stick paper well:augie

Cheers guys, some great ideas there... and one or two not so great ones...:lol:lol

The plastic is not thick enough to risk trying to weld, they really are very thinly made. Initially I was wondering about hot glue, but I was worried that in the sun, it might melt again, and come unstuck.

I was after something to actually stick the plastic to it's self, rather than the car. I have the automotive tape for round the outside, but the panel has 8 "C" shaped mouldings, on the back, that hold the trim clips, all of which are ripped off. It is these that I need to glue back on, as the panel clips not only help with alignment, but take the weight off the tape.

Zippy has kindly offered to send me some MSHG, which I will try. I also like the look of the Plastic Araldite. I might get some of that, and put some round the bottom of the cups, then strengthen it up with the MSHG, belt and braces fix...

While the car was having it's MOT, I wandered down to the industrial park to waste some time. Checked out all the glues in Homebase, Halfords, and the motor factors...

Every one, even the plastic specific ones like the Araldite all say in bit writing, "suitable for Plastic*", and then on the back in very tiny writing, "* except polypropylene...." etc

It looks like the only options are to use a mixture of things, basically, my variable heat soldering iron and some other PP filler to physically weld the clip holders into place, and create a rough layer in the plastic, then a layer of epoxy over that, to give it a bit more mechanical strength, followed by something like HMSG all around the mounting, to tie it all together and help keep the other fixings from excessive moment.

Then to fit it back to the car, I have to do what I really did not want to do, and basically bodge it back on with lots of Tiger seal, automotive tape and the clips to make sure it all stays in place.... Then wrap the car in a big elastic band while the glue dries...:augie

Gaffer tape...

jobs a good en.:augie
:lol:lol:lol

Well might be worth keeping a roll in the car for when all the other glues fail.:lol:lol

Some plastics are a pain, degreasing the plastic and the paintwork before using adhesives is essential.

The problem you have is vibration, slam from the door, heat from the sun, salt, car park bumps and knocks, wax coated paintwork, moisture ingress and even expanding ice.

The bigger the surface area of the glued surfaces the better, some of these "no nails" adhesives will probably be ok too.

Just a thought..
