After having a poke about at the weekend I came across this
The other side is starting to go aswell :(
Started to make some plates up to get it welded up but how long can this go on??I have to say that of all the terranos I have owned this one has been a never ending job cutting out and welding up rot.
Starting to loose faith in the old thing.

It's not a pretty sight, I feel for you! Remember that faith is the last thing to leave the human body, keep on fighting! :bow

Well I've said for a while that the newer trucks were not as well protected against corrosion, that's one of the reasons why I px'd my 05 plate. I guess that panel is the same as the front wings, hopes drilled and mud and water traps.

My son passed comment yesterday when we were working on the front cross member asking me why nissan didn't protect the panels better when they built the trucks.

Does amke you wonder how many vehicles on the road today have hidden corrosion.

On the brightside you will get to a point where all the bad sections for corrosion are fixed and it'll not need repairing again. That's the way I'm looking at it on my old trucks. Also to be honest I can't find another model of truck that I like as much as a terrano. For me they are just so practical and in a lot of ways are bullet proof and I know this is gonna sound sad but I like the looks of them too.

My 2001 T2 was a rot box, that's why I gave my 2005 T2 a bloody good look over prior to buying and a good going over with cavity waxes and now give it a regular blast. So far, it's looking good.

Don't give up bud as this is my favorite t2 on here and base mine on it.

Pft, bloody smart that one :lol Did you not see mine
Tub it mate :naughty

Just gets you down, I'm going to reshape the metal work under the plastic arches to get rid of the lip so it reduces the area for crap to collect.

The damage occurs from within. Condensation collects on the inside and runs down the panel into that lip. Add some plastic rivet holders and bingo fizzy metal work
So once you've done , get in there and rust cure/proof the inside :thumbs

That's why I hammerrited my floor inside under all the matting :thumb2

The floor is fine mate its the rest of it :lol:lol

I have got a load of zintec (zinc coated steel) which I am making all the patches from.
Tempted to just cut out all the floor and arches and start again.

I now use stainless, welding coated steel produces not so nice gases, and smaller off cuts of stainless are easy to come by, and you only need to coat the weld area for rust protection, saves lots of under seal, Rick

I think also there are many vehicles on the road with hidden rust. The 05 Terrano I just bought also has hidden rust which I could only assess properly after I had bought it, got it home and pulled up the carpets. Its the same place where my old Terrano started its demise where the wheel arch meets the boot floor but it's not half as bad. I was also relieved to find the cab mounts under the rear seats was free from rust but I trembled as I lifted the carpet with crossed fingers.

My old terrano did get to the point where all the bad bits had been cut out and replaced and I had 2 years of no welding.:clap
Then one day the windscreen suddenly developed a crack under the tax disc. The windscreen was replaced but the guy from Autoglass said he was going to turn a blind eye this time but the reason it cracked was due to rust and if it went again they would not replace it.
I decided to investigate this rust so I removed the panel under the windscreen and OMG!!!:eek::eek:
The panels the bonnet hinges were bolted to were like rusty foil with pin holes so I left well alone. There were a few holes under the windscreen but there was a massive rust area where the windscreen had cracked which quickly became a hole about 4" diameter. With a couple of pokes with the screwdriver :eek: that was the death of her really, it would have been a lot of work to put that right, dashboard out, windscreen out and it's quite busy nearby with the ECU wiring loom.
It goes back to what you said about hidden rust - you just don't know where next :(

Once the welding is done next Tuesday I am going over the whole car with hydraulic oil then waxoil wasteoil 50/50

Can get hold of stainless through work but will have to wait until we have something a bit thinner in stock as 5mm is a bit thick to repair body panels :lol

You're lucky getting the waste off cuts to use elty, wish I could. Still can't grumble at the cost of my metal sheets, think it's 1.6mm and plenty of it but bought a piece of 3mm to do the body mounts on my project which are nice and solid now.
Yours is a nice truck elty amd you have the skill to fix it up, you can do it.

Started cutting away the rot today, won't be much left at this rate.
After much prodding and poking and head scratching I've decided the best way forward is to cut out the floor and inner arches from the rear seats back and replace the lot.
Scrounged some 2mm plate, box section and angle iron from work. Taking it off the road for a bit while I do all the work.
Mot time for the mini beast :thumb2

A bit drastic whole floor and arches but I can well understand and of course a solid truck that'll last for years. You can give it the best rust proofing on the new metal so it'll stay like that.

A whole new project thread perhaps?

Good luck and don't give up it'll be well worth it in the end:thumbs
