Need a bit of help with this guys.
Went on short journey last week and on way back noticed whining noise from gearbox, by the time I got near home noise was very loud whine/ dronning. No problem changing through the gears and the noise was reduced when the speed ing up or under a bit of load.
Truck has been parked up since. This weekend thought I would do a bit investigating and checked the oil levels. When I loosened the transmission fill plug oil came running out so guess this has been over filled in past as is recommended. Removed fill plug from transmission box and put finger in. Nothing there so removed drain plug and got about 1 litre out. Also magnet had lot of metal fillings stuck on. Put finger in and dragged out more metal fillings/slithers and a couple of chain links!! So the transfer box is shagged but what I'm not sure about is would this be making the noise as when its in 2 wheel drive the transfer box/chain is not moving. So could it be both boxes are knackerd or would the drive bearing in the tranfer box be making the noise??

This sounds like what Ogri had in his and he had to have a gearbox rebuild :( :doh

If yours is like mine then yes, the front internals are always spinning so yes transfer is moving :thumb2

Sorry to hear. Does it work atall?

gearbox is separate from the transfer box, if the bits you got out are from the transfer box then just change that, a lot easier than the whole thing, but if you are not using 4 wheel then you can do it at your leisure as it is not turning in two wheel unless you have the fixed hub later model, in which case the transfer box is being turned by the front diff, Rick, ps I got spare transfer boxes if you need one.

Problem solved :lol

Another +1 for rick.. I'll get one one day :lol

Thanks for that Rick, I was wondering why the trans box would be noisey in 2 wheel, hadn't thought about the fixed hubs. So if I remove the front prop shaft I can drive it without the noise and risk of more damage?
If I can't find a trans box locally I will be in touch. Thanks.

Removed the front prop shaft yesterday and gave it a short run. Same noise still so cant be transfer box. Noticed again that noise went or reduced when under load and when braking with the gearbox. Thought if gearbox was on way out it would be noisier when underload??
Read an old post by Rustic earlier about putting transfer box in neutral and running through gears. Just done this and box starts making noise in 3rd and gets louder to 4th and loudest in 5th. Sounds like knackered bearings.

They are noisy gearboxes anyway, even a reconditioned box I had for mine has a whine in 3rd and 5th gear. It's one of those situations where you just have to keep an eye....:doh... an ear on it and see how bad it gets or how much you have to turn up the radio. Now that you know it's there you will be listening harder for it and looking further in to the pending doom :(

Some gearboxes go on for years with the symptoms you've described, if it's going to go then it will get extremely noisy and it's going to cost you £550 part exchange from David Beumont + the cost of fitting it..... then again it may not go at all.... who knows?

wait till it fails then you can deal with it, it can go for tens of Ks with noise, no problem, Rick

The noise is already very loud. As I don't really need to use the truck due to having a van, wifes car & daughters car I have started on removing the gearbox. When its out I will strip it and decide wether to rebuild with new bearings or go for replacement.

Can you get plenty of pics up mate of as many angles as you can especially that of damage etc etc

This has yet to be documented and I'm sure would be of much interest to all the other members.

We could even go as far as workshoo downloading it :thumbs

OK see what I can come up with. Job will take a bit of time as I'm busy with work and other things also.

+1 on this. Detailed pics are the only thing needed really :thumb2

I think ive got pictures of whats left of my auto box after it went tuts up

Sounds like the input shaft bearing, sadly a common problem mine went a couple of years ago total bill for repair and a full clutch kit which was not essential but as the gearbox was off seemed like a good idea was £820 inc. VAT at my local commercial workshop. Not a bad job and still seems to be OK 30k miles later but the interior had a slightly oily finish due to the work being done by truck mechanics.

when it breaks, fix it until then drive it, Rick

I hear what your say but I'm the guy that would be driving on the M1 in rush hour, pissing it down with rain, freezing cold, 78 year old mother and wife as passengers when it decides to break
