A bit of advice please guys.

My 5th gear has a bit of a whine that sounds like a straight cut competition box but a bit quieter. Truck has done nearly 180k miles.

I have bought some GL4 gear oil and I'm tempted to overfill it a bit by maybe parking two wheels on the kerb. Any thoughts about that :nenau

The more basic question is can anyone help with the location of the filler/level plug

I'm not the most able of mechanics but prepared to give it a go - what's the worst that can happen :lol

Dunno about for our terranos but jaguar do this special additive for gearboxes for the old skool stuff to stop whines ect. Works wonders (added with gearbox oil)

Over filling by 1/2 a litre can help the bearings out but for the price I would look into trying an additive like molyslip as it might help to quieten it down a bit but in the end at some stage the box is going to need a rebuild or replacement. IIRG the filler plug is on the drivers side

Thanks sweety, I've tried to read up on additives but there seems to be lots of different opinions on whether they actually work or not.

I know I'm only putting off the inevitable rebuild / replacement but if I can get another few months out of it I'll be happy.

Think I'll stick a bit of extra oil in and grab some Molyslip or similar next week and see where I go from there.

If I remember I'll ask for you at work today, it's meant to be some good stuff.

I had a slight whine from the box when approaching roundabouts, using the engine to slow the car down, I added two variants of molyslip, must be over 5 years ago...

Never heard any whine since. I have done several posts on this, and what quantities to put in, as recommended from Richard, from molyslip.

It worked for me, had a slight whine from the Picasso box, so did that too. Both been ok since.

Caution...
These facts are what I believe is true, ie that the gearboxes have quietened down, BUT... my wife thinks I am going deaf, so maybe they are worse than ever so who knows...:lol:lol
I tend to call it selective hearing.:nenau

Seriously, when I first added the molyslip to the Mav, I noticed an improvement during the first journey.

Most whine from the gearboxes, occur in all gears except 4 th gear, this is an indication that the input shaft bearing has worn. Caused by lack of lubrication, a slight over fill helps. Top up on level ground, then jack up the side where the filler is, and put some more in. Don't put too much in though.

Many owners have driven many thousands of miles with this rattle.

Yeah... it was called sawdust...:doh:doh:doh

:lol:lol:lol

Well I've picked up some Molyslip gearbox treatment and 6 litres of Comma 80w90 GL4. I've cut a couple of metres of garden Hose and nicked one of the wife's funnels from the kitchen. Apart from dry weather is there anything else I need to do the gearbox and transfer box oils?

When I did mine. I got one of those large syringes, with a length of fishtank tubing on the end, as there was no way I could get the bottle up there. Took a while to do, but made the least amount of mess. Oh, and like the diff oil, it's easier if you warm it up first

Oh, I was going to try and do it from the engine bay with my garden hose and funnel contraption. Do I need a rethink?

A tip for filling gearboxes axles etc is to modify a garden sprayer, the type you pump up, with a curved bit of metal tube to hook into the filler hole. Put the correct amount of oil in the vessel and pump it up. It will fill whatever you want fairly quickly with no mess. This method is extremely useful when filling autoboxes down the dipstick tube.
I hope this is of use to someone.

I never tried that, only thing I can think about, would be, once the gearbox is full, any oil in the pipe, which will be a fair amount will be going all over the floor, as there is no real warning before it is over full. That might work to get the main amount in though.

Mine whines in all but 4th and rattles on idling, been doing it for more than 40k and still going, and I tow heavy regular, I would not worry about it, filler plug is about halfway up on drivers side, there is nothing to be gained by overfilling, Rick

Get some pics up if you can mate and we can workshop download it :thumbs

I want to do gearbox oil and transfer box oil at some point as these are due a change as I haven't ever done them since I've owned it :doh

if the seal is kapput at the input shaft you risk splattering your clutch plate with horrible stinky oil if you overfill, this is why there is a limit. do a standard oil change first and see if it improves, if not add a bit of additive (or fine saw dust).

Well I did the oil change (sorry but forgot camera so no pics) used some Molyslip gearbox additive and Comma 80w90 GL4. I got about 4 litres out of the box and it took about 4.2 to get it up to the fill bolt hole level (book says 3.6?). The magnetic drain plug was FULL of metal filings and so was the oil that came out :(

Took it for a run and at first no noticeable change but gradually it got worse!

I've asked a local gearbox man for a price on a rebuild but for now I won't be driving it...

If it gradually got worse then maybe it had thicker oil in it to mask the problem to start with eg thicker truck oil...

I think you may be right. Either a heavier oil or some other additive but it came very cheap - 1600 quid for a 54 plate so I was waiting for the catch - I guess I found it.
