Gearbox oil change

Cool, Im all good to go

I'll be doing it at work,

1: remove filler cap.
2: remove drain plug.
3: drain G'box oil
4: replace drain plug (with PTFE)
5: use syringe tool (looks like grease gun) to pump new fluid
6: stop when it oozes over my face
7: refit filler (with PTFE)

have I forgotten anything :lol

there will be Terrano hating technican around If I need help :augie

The technicans here advised against over-filling incase hydraulic lock or tension on gears was caused.

Re 6... bit concerned about that one, you are not getting confused with other activities are you..I don't believe I just wrote that...:augie

Just tell us what oil you have, and how much...

I bought the proper Nissan MT-XZ oil specifically for the Terrano (and sports cars) :augie

I don't think putting an extra half litre in will cause any damage as when filling on the level you can't get the recommended oil quantity in mines been inverted comma's over filled for years and no brobs

mmmmmmmmmm about a month ago i asked a question about oil and what was recommended and one of my replys was "oil is effin oil" and " if my engine is fussy about oil its crap"... It would seem this is not the case otherwise we could put 10/40 in the gearbox aswell heheheheheh...

Actually it's quite likely you won't be able to get all the old oil out :thumb2

OK changed my oil today, was lovely, breaker bar undoes both bolts, it poured our the filler cap when I undid it.

For those of you that say 3.5L of oil.is needed that's a fat lie, mine took the whole 5L and was only just dribbling out.. Lucky... When I drained there was water inside too, some.of the oil was slightly milky.

Alex a bit strong there, saying that 3.5 litres is a "fat lie", when the early gearboxes took just that. As far as I am aware, and is probably the reason people added an extra 200ml to those boxes, not sure how much people added to the later ones though..
The later gearboxes do take more.
That oil is a bit black, how long has it been in?

As for water in the oil, do gearboxes have a breather pipe? If so has it broken or need extending for your off road adventures.

Well done Alex, a blocked breather means that when the box hits cold water, it will cool down and take in air or water from the weakest point, it could be a drive shaft, gear lever cover plate, gasket, oil level filler plug, if not sealed etc More likely gear leaver cover plate.
As far as I am aware the breathers culminate on the bulkhead on the driver's side as a downward facing dip pipe. Well mine is there.:thumb2

If you haven't extended your axles & gearbox breathers for wadding that could also be the reason for a little water in the box. Oil was defiantly ready for a change but i've seen far worse:augie

I love all the comments, this one being my favorite. I know the gearing changed on the later models thought it was just the rear diff, perhaps there are changes in the box too, perhaps they reworked this bearing only half submerged... I couldn't believe how much oil it took.

Yes wading is most likely re the water, I have been through lots!!

I will check to see if I have a downward drain on bulkhead, I currently have no extended breathers

So far the Terrano feels better the more I drive, done about 90 miles since oil change, I will give it more time before making final judgement.

Re the black oil it's only 1 year old!!

no way can box oil go black, my guess is molyslip which black due to the molybdenum disulfide or graphite additive, Rick

What ever made it black I'm sure Rick will be on the right trail it is good that you have changed it. Got to say Alex, I'd be tempted to run it a while and then change again so you are using the oil as a flush. Maybe after your trip to Belgium?

Perhaps I might change it again..but it wasn't cheap so er...

My trip is approaching fast, this friday morning we set off

The technicans at work tell me the difference should be almost instant in a manual box... It's a bit better but not great.. Does that mean I have a shot box? :nenau

Black oil ?

Maybe the black oil is from previous use of Molybdenum Disulphide as suggested or similar aftermarket additative.
Used to hide something or just someone being extra safe. It will take a few changes to get rid of it all.

Would ptfe tape be ok for drain plugs?

Reason I ask is that the diff drain plug on the project weeps a little but as I'm going to be changing the diff oil soon I've not been too worried.

Hiya, I used ptfe tape on my rear diff and gear box plugs, about a fortnight ago, I've been looking for leaks and not seen any, I will use ptfe on transfer box and front diff too, hope this helps, Mark :thumb2

P.s. plumb centre for ptfe, or tape for gas fittings is thicker!

Can you recall what the oil taken out at that oil change looked like, was that black too?
If it's not additive, what else could possibly be making the oil black?
Rubber seals or gaskets :nenau not enough of those on, in or near the box.
Could the oil have got too hot and burnt? It's not an Auto, so unlikely.
The oil was black going in lol

If you are going to run the gear box oil with a water contamination, then consider gear oil for outboard engines. They have extra additives which reduce corrosion, water often gets in them, and the oil can come out grey, not just milky. The above comment was a bit tongue in cheek, so don't take it as advice lol...
