do not think I have done a box oil change possibly only checked the levels but maybe not as if it was black I would have noticed straight away, on all transmission levels I always dip my finger and look at the oil for clarity, so anything other than clear would flag up an alert, Rick

Excellent tips here, I actually use my drivers door handle to hold the funnel with a hose rammed into it sealed with duck tape.

The hose goes under the car and into the filler hole on the side of the gearbox. I just add some more oil into the funnel when nearing empty as I walk back and fore doing odd jobs about the place. I have a tray to capture the oil when it starts to ooze out.

It has been mentioned that you should remover the filler plug before the drain plug. Very obvious to most but to numpties like me ..... no it isn't.
At no time has anyone said word to the effect " Don't drain the oil out with out being sure you are able to put oil back in and where you had a Truck that was on the road, you now have a truck that is off the road " :doh

Sometimes the obvious just gets overlooked. I have rebuild engines which were fine for years, I have surprised myself what I have achieved :clap

....... then I am confused as to why I am nearly all the way through the second container of oil and the new oil isn't showing on the dipstick. I see the sump plug where I left it on top of the battery :doh:doh:doh:doh:doh:doh:doh:doh:doh:doh:doh:doh:doh:doh:doh

Off into town ( in wifes car ) to get more oil and drive cleaner :doh

Yeh Alex mate get all your breathers extended (axles, gearbox and transfer box), mine all run up to my snorkel head now :thumbs

Until you do though you can try and limit the chances of sucking in water. The reason water is pulled in is due to the cooling effect on the hot oil in the axle/box as you enter the water which makes the oil rapidly contract creating a vacuum effect. If the end of the breathers are above the water you just suck in air. If the ends are underwater...:(

Letting the truck sit for a minute before entering any water will let things cool a little if you've been running hard and help lessen the chance of pulling in water.

Hey again chaps, interesting re the funnel in door handle!

I will dig up the old thread, we defo changed the box oil :thumb2 I was stuck in that swamp for about 20 mins engine running, perhaps it sucked in a load of muck.

I also got caught in solid traffic for two hours on the a40, to the point I was worried about the engine and box.

Yeah breathers on the list, the piping is cheap right? :thumb2
