I know a few waiting to find out if the proper oil I bought from Nissan will do the job -

http://www.nissan4x4ownersclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=25831

Is there anyone local to Uxbridge/high Wycombe area who has drained gearbox before? If anyone would be up for doing my oil this weekend I'd happily donate beer money.

Can't imagine it's a long job, Rick was speedy gonzales :lol

047446265401 buzz me if u can :thumb2

Undo the filler plug first as they can stick at times if it comes out fine then remove the drain plug & let it drain out then just put the new oil in & add an extra 1/2 litre if you can:thumbs

I go with that, we cannot all be expert mechanics and some just cannot understand nuts and bolts, just like we are not all computer geeks, Rick

I Do know the "how" mainly just scared incase I cock something up, trip to bruges next weekend, after watching Rick do it in 5 mins...

I need some sort of hose and funnell too :nenau

Think you can add oil through the top somehow. Is it where the lever attaches, that said Alex if it hasn't given you any concerns is it better to leave it until after your trip?

By the way, you sound like me. Worried about messing it up because it's your daily ride, that's one of the reasons the project truck has been golden.

Enjoy your trip

Many of us probably think like this. I use my Transit daily for work. I wouldn't dream of taking a spanner to it for fear of being of the road and not earning.

But the truck...

...replaced seat belts, shocks, fuel lines, ...

Yeah I crap myself as mine is my daily driver and I do more miles to work now than ever so I'm always a bit more apprehensive when I know I have a job coming up on the car, I just now do lots of research or have done the job before on the Maverick so I have a fighting chance so I'm not without my car

Hose and funnel definitely the way forward! No more farting about under the truck squeezes gear oil bottles...

You can't cock it up bud. Remove filler plug. Remove drain plug. Once finished draining replace drain plug (put a wee bit thread gasket on the plug threads before screwing in). Fill through filler hole until oil starts seeping out then replace filler plug. Job done :thumbs

Nothing like seeing it's 7pm on a Sunday and you've still got almost half the job still to do :augie

Those are the worst ones!!!!!!! When the temp drops, you lose the light and all your helpers dwindle home, you have to just push through, I re-indexed my torsion bars on the Maverick lying on top of fresh snow!!!! never again

You put the funnel under the bonnet, loosly tied off to say.... the fuel filter, the hose pipe drops down to near the gear box, then you add the main bulk, then check until it starts to come out.
Then I jacked up the side with the filler plug on, axle stands at the ready, added another 200ml, some add more... go underneath, remove pipe, and refit filler plug.
Now mine is the 1995 MkI Maverick, and if I recall my filler plug is on the nearside, so adjust the technique to suit.

NOTE: it is essential to refit the drain plug before refilling :doh, and this process is messy and will leave gear oil spilt on the floor, so take precautions, this is where my mortar mixing board is useful.:thumb2
I have always used non setting thread gasket on both the filler and drain plugs.
It stops moisture getting to the threads and corroding.:thumb2

Would ptfe tape be ok for drain plugs?

Reason I ask is that the diff drain plug on the project weeps a little but as I'm going to be changing the diff oil soon I've not been too worried.

Temperature can be an issue, but PTFE is good for 260C
So gearboxes and diffs should be ok.
Some on the forum have used it with no problems.:thumb2

How are you able to add extra? Thought you fill to line?

Once you have the right amount in (it'll start dribbling out of the filler hole) I just jacked the front of mine up by about 6" or so & was able to pour an extra 1/2 litre in
Jim the grain plug on the rear diff of my old T2 used to weep so wrapped the threads with PTFE tape & it stopped it & never leaked again
