A burst of activity today. Fitted turbo boost gauge and also vacuum gauge in twin pod on dashboard shelf and a modified TERRAIN meter in seperate housing.(A bit of a gimmick but ---- what the heck! Won't stop a roll-over but it would still work upside-down. 8) )
Had to remove intercooler to fit take-off into inlet manifold pipe. Cleaned it all out whilst it was off--- not much filth in there. Pleased about that.
Worst part of job was wrestling with large sprung pipe clips which secure rubber inlet tube. Finished up relacing them with heavy duty PVC ties. Turbo side had sensible jubilee clips.
Only done about ten miles since. System holding together OK so far  .
Boost gauge shows turbo becoming useful at about 1200 RPM and holding a steady 12/14PSI at 1500-1600 and above. Hasn't risen above that so perhaps wastegate is doing its job nicely.
Vacuum gauge shows about 30in hg until brakes are used then it moves down relative to demand but picks up quickly after use. It shows vacuum system is intact--needle doesn't drop even after hours with engine off.
Was frozen stiff after working outside for about 4 hours but I reckon it's worth it just for the interest in seeing things performing surprisingly well. Even the background lights work
Looking something like a cockpit now.

the boost gauge good job but when i fitted mine i bought a boost valve as well didn't half make a difference boost alot faster up hill you would think you where in a petrol car if you know what i mean

Hi scooter.
Please enlighten---What is a boost valve? What does it do? How does it do it?
Thanks in anticipation.

sacooter did you get that system off e-bay if you did i work with the guy who makes them  ?

I have heard you got to be very carefull with turbo boost valves as a mate of mine had one fitted to his R5GTT & over boosted it & killed his engine as he went over the max boost  Does anyone know what the max boost you can run on a T2 safely :?:
Hi Chaster would it be poss for you to send me a pic of the fitting into the inlet manifold as i'm wanting to fit a boost gauge aswell

from what i gather the only safe boost kit, brings yor boost in quicker not greater than recommended i have heard of landies having troubles with my colleauges kit blowing engines ETC but the best results he has had is with Rover 600 TI's

Intresting reading, any pics of the unit fitting and guide on safe fitting?

guages--blow and suck.

Hi sweety. No problem ; sun has just come out so I will nip out, take a pic and email it over.

Was wondering how these ere boost valves work. Seems to me that they over-ride the waste gate valve settings. Don't think I'm in for that. My boost gauge shows 13 PSI max at 1600rpm or over. After that the WGV opens, and it stays at 13 steady.

If anyone knows that it could safely be set a waft higher then I am happy to tweek the waste gate valve actuator (now that I can see what the turbo is producing). I have run the engine with the intercooler off and felt the force from the turbo----not going to experiment too much with that sort of draught, it's awesome when the revs are up.

13psi is the standard pressure more or less = 0.9 bar.

I think you could take it up a bit with out any probs 16psi (1.1bar) shouldn’t hurt. But don’t blame me if things go wrong.
I have run mine at 1.5bar (21psi) for a time, but not having any extra fuel going in on the tdi engine there wasn’t enough gain to risk blowing a gasket or two. The tdi really needs chipping first.

Gauges---blow and suck

Thanks for the info Jeremy. Good to know that the system is set right and working well. I will sleep on it before doing any tweaking.

Have done a few more miles now and I must remember to keep my eyes on the road instead of the gauges. I'll be OK when the novelty wears off. 'Till then they're fascinating.
