hello

can anyone maybe shed some light on a strange noise coming from my 2.7td lwb maverick, 1998, with 112,000 miles on the clock.

it's a sort of droning/humming noise that appears to come from the front end,

it gets louder/higher pitched as the speed increases, but when i knock it out of gear and coast, it goes away completely.

i couldn't swear to it, but i'm sure it's also worse when the car is cold.

also, on a recent trip to the UK, when the car got hot there seemed to be a sort of 'electric fan/motor' noise every so often. it was noticeable above the engine noise, ran for a couple of minutes, then seemed to 'switch off'.

any pointers would be much appreciated.

Leave the wife in the house and i'm sure the noise will stop, thats were most of the droning and humming usually comes from:lol

well....from cold, or from a fresh start, the fan will make an almighty noise as you describe it, and increase on acceleration then after a minute perhaps, die down. its the viscous fan spinning, and if you watch other 4x4's liek Landrovers, Shoguns etc they will all do the same thing.

on the other hand, it could be your gear box, in which case get that oil changed and add some molyslip asap.

as for the fan coming on and off...yes, correct, its to cool the radiator like any other car. The viscous fan shoudl be spinning all the time, but will increase when required, either that or you have an extra electric fan fitted-nice! open the bonnet and have a look, take a pic, and post here if you are unsure...

Sounds the same as the sound my viscous fan makes, and at similar times.

Re. droning / humming noise from front end - if it disappears when you disengage drive, and goes with revs getting higher pitched i'd be saying lay shaft bearings in the gear box. Cant really think of anything else, especially if the car is fitted with free wheeling hubs (unless one of those has failed and making a noise, but that usually is a clicking ratchety sound)

Elec fan coming on and off - sounds like your fan works well! :thumb2

Mine makes a noise when I first get underway. It sounds almost like how the engine revs with clutch slip. I alway thought it was the turbo, but it is probably the fan on mine as well.

Did the car overheat?

Alan

fan noises, remember the 245 Volvo's you could here them coming before you saw it. :augie:thumb2

Had same noise after having a new waterpump fitted, turned out the fanbelt was fitted too tightly. Once loosened the noise went

But then it would still do it when you rev the engine... he said it disappears when drive is disengaged

thanks people

i'll get the gearbox oil changed asap and see what happens.

curiously the water pump was mentioned, i changed the pump several months ago, so i'm dubious it could be a tight belt after so long.

as for the fan/motor noise, the reason i mention it is not because it works, but because it sounds like it's running 'dry' if that makes any sense. it's a very metallic noise, and has never been noticeable before for the 2 years i've had the car.

bit of a bugger really, because we are thinking of selling it soon. it's just had some bodywork done so there's not a mark on it, 4 new tyres and new front exhaust.

and in the past 12 months it's had a new starter motor, battery, and 2 new hubs.

oh well...

thanks again
