Fuel drop

Hi guys!
I've found a small leak in the fuel system, but i can't identify the source.
with the engine running, i can see a drop every 15-20 seconds more or less. it hits the axle and falls on the ground, as you can see in the pic.

i suppose it is around the fuel filter case, in fact, this weekend i try to start the engine after some weeks and it took some seconds before starting, as if it was filling the diesel filter.

what could i check? i'm absolutely new to this engine, so i'm asking you before i make some damage!!

Could be injector returns, Common to degrade and leak.

They are rubber pipes that link across the top of the injectors, you will need to remove the intercooler to see them properly, Rick

3.2mm I'd leakoff pipe. Available in any motor factors

bad news..
yesterday the courier gave me the new pipe and in the afternoon I checked the injectors.
both pipes and injectors are new and clean.. no signs of leakage.

I checked again under the truck and it seems the injector pump is sweating a bit. idling the engine, i can see a drop every 15-20 seconds more or less, but revving the engine the frequency of the drops rises.

I'm afraid I'm not sure i'm able to fix it

Try washing the pump off with a hose and dry it best you can with rag, to see if you can locate the precise point of the leak, it could well be a simple fix like tighten or renew a banjo washer also the main leak off rubber pipe goes back to the pump, hard to get to but this is near the top of the pump so will cover the pump in fuel, Rick

what should i remove in order to have a good access to the pump?
without the intercooler i have a great view of the injector zone. I think i should remove the intake manifold, but i think i'd need new gaskets in that case

Easier than the manifold is the PS pump, just the belt and bolts do not touch the hoses and tie it up out of the way, then you have better access and with a mirror and torch will be able to see all round the pump, Rick

this morning i left the truck by a mechanic before going to work, in a couple of hours he called me back. the leakage is from the body of the pump.

i'm not comfortable servicing the injeftion pump, so i think i'll ask a specialist to check. maybe not the one that cheched the pump last year. :whip:

You'll either be leaking from the pump head seal where the injector pipes attach, which is near "1" on the schematics above or the Input Shaft Seal, behind the triangualar shaped plate at "8"

I'd recommend swapping both for Viton ones as it's stronger than rubber and also used for food grade applications which will allow you to safely run Vegetable Oil through the pump (should you want to) at a later date without the fear of damaging the rubber seals

When I had the head seal blow on my first injector pump, I would without fail get the EML light on the dash and when reading the DTC's out of the truck would always have a "21" stored which translates as;

"Fuel injection timing solenoid/injector needle lift sensor-malfunction"

it seems quite easy, indeed..
but i guess i have to detach the pump from the engine and that's what i fear most!
