Have ordered a chrome a-bar  and am planning on fitting rectangle 9inch spot lights to it wired to main beam, the lights are 100watt bulbs though, BUT when I put it in for MoT if I put the light covers on them this wouldn't mean a fail on the MoT would it?

also thinking about fitting smaller spot lights lower watts and wiring them to the small existing front fog lamps, not sure about that yet though, anyone tried it?

You will have no prob's with your spot lights, they are not part of the mot..

As long as they are indepentently switched, if they just come on with high beam they're tetable and will probably end up attracting the wrong sort of interest from the police.

Vehicles registered after 1987 must be fitted with 'E' marked bulbs, you'll be very fortunate to find any in anything other than 55w. I beleive PIAA do some in 100 watt but theyre something like £40 each - for just a bulb. You'd be very unlucky to get done for this one but if they're on a separate switch you can say they are for off road use only.

How about if they take a feed from high beam but can still be switched off with a seperate switch. That way you can leave the switch turned on to make them come on and off with high beam but still argue they are only turned on for off rad use.

This is exactly how I wired mine, I fitted 100w bulbs from Maplin.
Of course they are only switched on for off roading..
But you have to "remember to switch them off" for road use.
I also wired in the front fog lamps so they came on via a switch and again when on full beam.
They take the feed from the high beam, via a switch then a relay.
For high beam, you have to be careful which side to take the feed, as on side lights the head lights are wired in series on my version. So check the feed is only 12 volts when on full beam, and not on side lights. Can't remember if its near side or off side, but at first I got the wrong side. Edited 7 7 08 thanks to rbrt, take feed from nearside.

For MOT time the switches are off. Never been questioned in 6 years since they were fitted.
I actually fitted them behind the front grill, on a home made bracket just in front of the radiator. ( no aircon on mine to get in the way)
best regards, Rustic

mine all 8 of them are just wired to a bunch of relays, which is activated via the full main beam,

just passed mot last week :)

 , cheers for help, will have a think, what about if have 100 watt attached to main beam, but come MOT time put the little plastic caps over the lights? then they won't show, you can say that u only take caps off for off-road?

If you leave the caps on with the lamps on, they may melt, or reduce the life of the bulb!
You only need 2 wires in series with the relay coil going through the bulkhead to a small switch on the panel. Mine are wired to a spare knock out next to the hand throttle, lower right of the steering wheel.

take the feed from the near side (Left) .

as i understand it you can ave any number of main beam spots
in any position, provided they ar in pairs and go off with dip.

oh and the max bulb is 55w for road use.

we did hve construction and use thread running maybe 6 months
ago.

on subject of factory fogs, as per my twin round light model, aren't
they bright. the pattern is more like dipped main, it still seems odd
there is no tell tale on the dash as there is for the rear fog.

they could certainly fire with main beam, a i have toyed with idea
already, but i dont think you can have more than 1 pair of fogs
for proper fog use.

Just make sure that they are running through there own relay and not the main one straight off the main beam.

i've been using 100 watt bulbs in my transit for 6 months with no problems, even passed mot, i think it depends on the tester on the day to be honest, i will be fitting my A bar soon with spots and fogs, but these will be wired with relays from main beam, :naughty
