Front hubs

Picking your collective brains again:augie
My Terrano has the flange type non-freewheeling front hubs.
Looking at possibility of obtaining manual locking hubs with a view to reducing fuel consumption.
Has anyone done this to a flange drive type. Couln't find anything on a quick search. Have contacted Milners about the subject but await their reply.
Would be greatful for any pointers/tips/info.:thumb2

I've never heard of this being done but it's a good idea as I can tell the difference when hubs are locked and to be honnest it is a lot livlier when hubs are disengaged.

auto hubs

This was a common mod on early Land Rovers, it was just remove the drive flange and replace with the manual hub, these were fitted to inprove fuel economy! we used to get about 2 to 3 MPG inprovement. I was thinking of seeing if the drive flange of the later torrano would fit in place of the old auto hub, more thinking - if it would then the manual hub should fit the later model ?????????

Fast replies to my emails. What's more they say that their manual hubs are a direct replacement for auto OR flanged hubs :thumb2
Just the news I wanted. Bit puzzled about the fact that they say you have to drive backwards for a couple or three metres to ensure MANUAL hubs disengage properly. Not a big issue if this is so (just like auto hubs ). But I didn't think this was necessary with manual hubs
Just wonder what others experiences are about having to back up to ensure MANUAL hubs uncouple after going back to 2WD ?
Any comments would be appreciated before I part with about £150 for a pair.

if thats the case cant you just fit auto's then much less getting out of the car in the cold and you cant forget them
ive never broken any auto's i thought mine wore out gut they are fine..... i like auto hubs...... dont see the need for manuals

and you can buy second hand auto's from a breaker

Thanks for your pointer ; damned good logic :thumbs
Puzzling point is that the flange is secured by nuts onto six shortish studs fixed into the hub.:doh
The freewheel units and manual lockers are secured by six long allen key type bolts going into female threads on the hub.(where the studs are)
When I look at the exploded view on the e-manual it does not look compatible unless the shortish studs can be removed and leave correct threaded holes for allen screws. Milners make it seem so easy but perhaps they have missed my point !!! or I have not explained it clearly enough Maybe I will phone them and have a chat with a human being. meanwhile---any more tips etc would be greatfully received:

well assuming the innards or the drive shaft will accept the brake rings etc.... removing the studs should be a breeze then just use the allen bolts from the auto hubs..... worth a trry though....

maybe someone could send you a kit on a try before you buy

well dont know if this helps but my manual hubs give me better miles per gallon and do the job:thumbs

I turn them to lock them on the hub and then drive as normal in 2wd untill I need 4wd no getting in and out when off road:thumbs

Chaster hasn't got auto hubs, Nissan deleted them later on in production and just fitted drive flanges.

Update about front hubs.
After long and hard deliberations , thought I could adapt a pair of old autos. A very kind and helpfull eBayer sent me a pair of standard auto hubs (sale or return) to try out. All would have been good except for the studs ------ could I get them out ?------ in a word----NO

Tried penetrating fluid, heat , cold and even tested for l/h thread. No way were those studs going to come out for me. Gave up before I sheared anything or ruined the back plates.
Sent sellers hubs back ------ refunding minus expenses :clap

Got a pair of manuals from our old friends Milners :thumbs
Fitted them today , seems quite a bit free' r running. Topped diesel up.
Will be interesting to see what happens to consumption.

Now that I've seen how these manuals work I can't understand why people say it is necessary to reverse after disengaging 4 wheel setting.:nenau Can understand the need when unlocking auto hubs , but with these Always happy to learn:thumb2

Once you have unlocked the manual hubs they are unlocked no need to back up.(unless they are sticking, poor maintenance lack of grease)

Some people get confused between manuals and autos.

Only the autos need backing up as they are spring / tension loaded on forward movement, that's why they come unlocked when reversing as they have no tension on them.

Front hubs again.

Have done over a hundred miles since fitting new hubs and I'm surprised how slowly the fuel guage has gone down. Could be over 10% improvement time will tell. Definately a much "looser" ride and a bit less noise from down under.

Did a mod to fit refashioned hub caps. Looks better says my Managing Director. I have to agree (or get no dinner !)
