Doing this for others ;) as much as my self

In complete idiot terms can somebody body that knows what there talking about please explain the difference & pros / cons of both MANUAL & AUTO Hubs...

All the Pay'n'Play chaps I know all say MANUAL Hubs are $HIT & to stick to AUTO Hubs...

The reason I'm posting this is firstly on Lynn's Vitara one hub is operating ok & the other is stuck on Un-Lock.
So there for it is only a 2WD or 3WD :nenau

Secondly I'm looking at getting another non inter cooled terrano & the one I'm looking at has non functioning hubs.

I can get manual hubs brand new cheaper than auto hubs & was curious to know if you leave them in the locked position do the affect the drive in 2WD mode  Will they then only lock when 4WD is selected  Making them in theory auto

I'm happy to look the idiot if i then understand them & how the work in conjunction with the transfer box. As others will get knowledge from this post I hope :p

pros for auto is u dont have to get out and turn them might sound easy but if 1 wheel is in a deep ditch you might not be able to get to it to turn it on unless u turn them on before :doh
but if u engauge 4h at high speed this could damage the auto hubs
as for keeping the manual 1s locked thats ok as it just turns in to a fix hub like in the late terranos think bout 2002 on wards but u must then put up with the mpg going down as well as then the front wheels will drive everything up to the tranfer box and that will drag
last point if lyns car has 1 hub stuck off then you wont even have 3wd just 2wd as you have an open diff on the front so all the power will go to the hub which is not locking dont no if thats what u wanted to no if ot i cant help:lol

Yup that is about it, but better than I could have explained it, Rick

Hi ADZ,
I replaced my Auto hubs with manual ones, when my auto one went.
The cost of manual ones are by far cheaper for the Troll, also when you have auto hubs & want to go in the opposite direction i.e when stuck, it takes a 1/4 to 1 full turn of the wheel for them to engage, thus loosing vital traction at the time when you need it most.
As you know i have a troll but i believe same set up, £600 i was quoted by Nissan to replace Auto hubs 7 years ago. £ 138 for manuals, elsewhere.

Nellie.

I have tried both on a non intercooler T2 (me and shark1e did the download) if you want a chat about the pro's and cons send me a PM and i'll send you my mobile number!

but to be fair, the advice given particularly Nellie, is pretty spot on! The other advice is good too, but his isn't to long for my attention span LOL

Not sure why the pay n play people describe the Manual's as rubbish:nenau If the auto's can be made easily and cheaply to work then I agree they must be the better choice. Replaced the Brake Ring's twice on mine in less than two years, the last time the n/s went it over heated the hub big time. I rarely go off road so all I do is lock the hubs before I'm likely to need 4wd. I can tell a difference when I unlock them so yes the MPG will go down and a little bit is taken from performance too. I do worry about extra wear too and also keep the speed to max of 60mph with the hubs locked. I certainly don't regret changing to manuals as they have never caused a problem for me.

I'm sure there is someone on here who welded his auto's in the locked posistion, maybe they'll come forward and explain how it's down.

I'd like to hear why the Pay n Play people think so badly of Manual's though.

Jim

Well I'll definitely go for AVM MANUALS from Milners if & when they go on Dirty Frog & will have to have a look at Lynns

" IF " :nenau i get this one tomorrow then i will definitely put Manuals on :thumbs :bow

Hi,
If one hub is locked and the other not in 2wd the front diff will be operating all the time as if one wheel is spinning and the other isn't, they are not designed to do this for long periods of time. In 4wd you will only have 2wd as has been said but all the bits turn as designed.
Bryn

Why not buy some cheap 2nd hand auto hubs and just replace like with like?

I know a good breakers yard :augie ;) :p

Your a year behind :augie :lol :doh

( look at the thread starter date ;) )

:thumbs

......just trying to get my posting count up :surrender

and the answer is - was?

Stick with auto, use the advice given here combined with a good study of the aforesaid download and make a choice.
Personally I don't want to be stepping out in 18 inches of mud to manually lock my hubs, if they don't work get to a scrappy and replace them.

terrano 4wd issues auto hub and light?

Hi, hope you can help.:nenau my father in law has a ford maverick and a nissan terrane 2. the terrane is having issues with its 4wd. We have just fitted a replacement auto hub from a scrape yard(told it is fully working. Ive looked at the treads and was wondering if some one could a direct me to a link on fitting the auto hubs just to make sure we've done it correct and secondly the 4wd light is only coming on in when 2wd is selected and goes out in 4wd. is this related? thanks. Simon:bow

what vintage is the T2? has it got the old square headlights, round headlights, or later facelift square headlights?

Usually with auto hub problems its just the snap rings that break due to people trying to whack it in 4WD while driving over a wall or something :doh so theres rarely a need to replace the whole hub.

The light is defo coming on arse about face, no idea why though but can't see it being related to hub assembly.

To check when it is/isn't genuinely in 4WD, just find some dry tarmac and reverse on full lock. If in 4WD it will quickly start 'skipping' as the tranny winds itself up - very evident and easily identified. In 2WD reverse on full lock should be smooth and incident-free (so long as your rear LSD has decent, correct oil in it - if it doesn't it can cause some misleading symptoms).

What does the light do if you select 4WD low (pull stick back, depress and pull back again at the lower setting)....?

hi again, its a t reg with round lights. I've just been on the phone to him and he also is saying that when in 2wd its making a winding voice and fells as it is trying to jump out of 2wd or 4wd. not quite sure what he means however, when 4wd is selected it doesn't make this noise. i'm going to try and do what you said about the tarmac tomorrow thanks. cheers, Simon:augie
