Front end noise (tyre related?) - what do you think?

So over the past few weeks I've noticed a whup whup/whirring/buzzing noise from the front of the Trol when doing any sort of speed (it's even faintly at town driving speed now).

Having had both wheels off (when I tried to change the front springs) I'm fairly certain the bearings are fine. I thought it might be the hubs but having driven around a bit with them locked up (they've been converted to manual) it didn't make any difference.

It did remind me of the cold weather/thickened transfer box oil issue that some Trols have, but while the weather has been a bit cooler it's not been overly so and I replaced the gear oil with ATF a while ago (per the relevant Nissan service bulletin) so it shouldn't be an issue. I also now have manual hubs which should prevent it happening (front prop would get turned by the thicker oil causing the auto hubs to bang in and out).

My suspicions are that it's road noise from the BFG Muds I have on the front as they wear down which is reverberating from the road surface underneath the truck. My reasons for this are 1) I've driven with the window down and there's no audible noise apparent from the open window, 2) it doesn't occur at low speed or when offroad (not that I can go that fast offroad) and 3) it seems to vary with the differences in tarmac road surface you get when travelling over any distance.

Anyone got any other thoughts? :nenau

Muds are the old school BFG muds by the way (ie. KM not KM2) and I know the tread etc was altered on the KM2s to reduce the road noise!

mine hummed like a swarm of bees with the kuhmos on.
I thought it was something wearing or catching but after going over everything I could think of I put it down to the tyres.
since changing from the kuhmos the noise/vibration has gone:thumb2
how long have you had the bfgs on?

Stones caught in the tread can make some weird noises.

I've had them on since just before Wales Elty.

I have heard BFG muds suddenly get noisier when they get more worn (mine are around 6mm) although the more I think about it the more I'm thinking it's something in one of the tyres especially as it's kind of a whup whup nose at times... think I'll go down and check tonight.

Tyres can do odd things, I had a late model Ford Galaxy a while back and at odd times it would really grind on the front on slight lock with a little bit of power on, come off the lock and it would stop, try and replicate is a few minutes later and no joy and may not get it again for days, it really sounded very serious like wheel bearings, the dealer told me it was the tyres, I walked out shaking my head, but it happen'd too often and as I had checked the front end out and it was the Mrs car I decided to fit two new different make tyres to the front, never heard the noise again, yes I do find it hard to believe but it happen'd, Rick

Yeah my MUDs sound like a supercharger whining, wish I had a supercharger :augie

Might pay to swap the tyres front to rear just incase it's one of the front tyres if it's they same you can almost rule out the tyres being at fault & costs nothing to do:thumb2
I often get steering wheel whobble at 50-60 as if i've lost a balance weight:doh take it upto 70/75 & most times I get a clatter in the wheel arch or a ping on the sill from the trapped stone/s in the tyre/s fly out drop my speed back down & all is well again. Stones trapped in the rear tyres give a nice gratting noise:augie

So remember I said this:

I'm fairly certain the bearings are fine.

Jacked up each front wheel and checked the tyres for anything stuck in them then rotated them a few times.

Nothing stuck in the tyres but both bearings are needing tightened up! :doh

Surprisingly the worst one is the offside one - the same one that had a full hub rebuild done on it by my local garage back in June

Just remember if they are tapper roller, THEY HAVE TO HAVE PRE LOAD, which means tighten to no play then around 20 to 25 degrees more, Rick

Hopefully you have found your problem then :thumb2

Do we have step by step pics of this, I remember taking off the cover, can't remember how involved to tighten up.

A bearing nut is pretty simple bud (although I'm sure there'll be pics somewhere).

Putting the preload on a new bearing needs the right equipment but I'm not repacking mine, just tightening up, and so can get away without the gear this time round (I checked the Trol forums to be sure).

The difficult part can be getting the bearing nut off though as it can vary how they're fixed to make sure they don't come loose.

(Cheers for the reminder by the way Rick)

we did yours down here the other day remember when we did your shaft, the bearing had play in it, took out the two locking screws and about quarter turn tol no free play then turned one lock hole more for pre load, not sure what the lock system is on a trol, Rick

Sounds identical from what I've been told. Cheers again :thumb2

Question folks - is this best done with the wheel on or off? (Opinion on the Trol forums seems split :nenau )

I did mine with wheels on as it gives you more leverage to check them as you go.

sent from my phone, sorry for any typo's.
