I thought I had recently seen the info I am looking for, but I'm blowed if I can find it!

Could some kind soul please tell me the oil capacity of the front diff on a '05 plate 3.0Di T2?

I change the rear (LSD) oil last week, found it had been running about 25% low, so thought I might as well change the front diff oil in case that is low.

Ta muchly!:doh

it will only be low if you have a leak, if no oil around the diff then it is not leaking, pull the level plug and dip your finger in, if you see clear oil, then replace the plug and all is well, if however it is milky then water has got in and it needs changing, Rick

Thanks for info, as the oil in the rear diff looked like my sisters gravy, thick brown and lumpy (well, bits in it), I will change the front diff oil regardless.

So question still stands...

How much oil does it hold?

Rear diff is a limited slip diff so gets contaminated with bits of the friction material.
Front diff is a standard open diff, no friction material, so oil should look as new, unless, as said before, water has got in, then it will be emusified. :thumb2

My regular mechanic, John Spademan (Stony Stratford), said that although the car has a full service history, it didn't look like the last service had been particularly thorough.

Hence I am doing a few precautionary things to try to avoid any nasty surprises!

:thumbs

front diff oil will last the entire life of the motor unless water gets in, as it is not used unless you do massif amounts of 4 wheel driving, Rick,

It has a full set of near worn out AT's on so I'm going with better safe than sorry, especially as the wife drives it a lot! (No-one wants the dearly-beloved on their back 'cos the trucks gone pop!) A few quid of oil and a half hour under the truck is worth it !

He has a 2005 Rick so front diff will be turning all of the time so nice fresh oil wouldn't hurt:thumbs

Mine a 04 3ltr and according to the comma oil website it's 1.3 for the front and 2.8 for the back. Both gl5..

What the hell for?

That's just work for works sake!

The trucks only got 52k on it, it's a third vehicle for the wife and I, and I only intend to keep it three years.

Blocky, I changed the rear diff oil last weekend and I can confirm mine was 1.8ltr, not sure where you got 2.8ltrs from.

Earlier ones with the cast iron diff take 2.8 litres.:thumb2

Put it in your diary. Three years time, hopefully it will still be in as good condition.

Would you like to pay a retainer?

Front diff update...

Ok. Front diff oil changed. 1ltr out, 1.5ltr back in.

Old oil a little discoloured, glad I changed it.

Sheared 1 of three remaining bolts holding skid plate so have removed broken bolts and it now has five again.

Turned truck on to move it off ramps...

diesel p1ssing out of fuel line above back axle.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH

:banghead:

I'll start another thread.
