Ho Peeps!

so i want to repair the bubbling rust in the usual spots at the front arches. I can see now that the black bumper-type covers come off easily, and im happy grinding down and repairing whats left but i dont know about the paint.

my car colour is that funny maroon colour....where can i get a decent, no hassle spray from? ideally id have a all in one spray if thats possible, as i dont know anything about paint repair (although willing to learn). THEN, id like to remove all the waxy crap from the bumpers (from years of back to black i assume), whats a good way to do this? i know it will end up faded grey, but i THEN want to paint the bumper trim to a nice black again, but i want this to be permanent, so any ideas for a black trim paint??

cheers guys, hope you can help!

I dont do rusty bits but the arches ; I have tried a few different products non seem permanent , best I could suggest is actually sand down the arches and paint them with plastic etch primer and then straight black. ( I did some Mondeo parts like this last week)
back to black and other cosmetic items just seem to work for a week.
Only other one I heard was use a hot air gun , can’t confirm or deny this one as I have never tried it.

The hot air gun method works, Theres lots of videos of it being done online but I beleive it lasts about 1 year then you need to do it again etc.

hot air gun idea seems interesting, certainly cheaper than paint, and if it lasts a year then thats better then back to black for a few reasons. ive got a hot air gun somewhere, so ill try it!

Paint.

Depending on the size you need to paint, Halfords will do a standard sized can the same as your paint code, Ive used them in the past (metallic green for the better halfs Micra) and it was good stuff, made a decent job really, only advice I can give is "preparation is 9 tenths of the job" so it pays to make a decent job of the prepping.

Good Luck

Oh and I think the cans are about 13 squid

woodauto on colne road will make you up a aerosol of paint in any colour you want clive , they sell laquer too

I hate rust, that is why I use waxoyl from day one.:thumbs

When I have sprayed things, not car related, I always think just a bit more spray here......:doh

and ...................... it creates a run.

So take it steady, leave plenty of time between coats.

I have also had reactions between primers and top coats so check compatibilty.
Don't spray on damp days, or the paint will bloom (go matt).

Protect from overspray, and watch out for dust and flies.

When you buy spray cans from say Halfords, do they match the original code on the car or compare it to the faded paint on the car?

I have always bought a Paint pen at the time I buy the car.
But when you come to use it.... It has dried out.:doh

Good luck.

ill be removing the arche cover, sanding back the rust bubbles and repairing using some p40 i have left. once dry, ill prime and spray it, im really not fussed about a perfect match or anything-the car is full of imperfections so what does it matter, all i want is the rust removed and treated.

i will however, give more time to getting the bumpers black!

Hi Take a look at this might be what your after

The permanent solution to sun-faded bumpers and trim mouldings.

Forever Black Bumper & Trim Dye Kit restores a dark, black, finish on sun-faded bumpers and body mouldings.

This is not a cosmetic dressing. It's an easy-to-use permanent dye. It permanently colours black plastic, rubber and vinyl with the same polymers that the manufacturers use. It is not a silicone dressing - silicone products will make plastic, vinyl and rubber appear to have regained their colour but the change is temporary. Plus, silicone oils have been known to dry out the applied areas creating a bigger problem. Silicone also tends to leave a greasy residue even after buffing.

How is Forever Black Different?

1. Forever Black permanently dyes black plastic, rubber and vinyl.

2. Forever Black will completely cover the worst wax build-up or sun-faded trim.

3. Forever Black will not wash off.

4. Forever Black dries in 5 to 20 minutes. No buffing is required.

5. Once dried, Forever Black will not attract dust. There is no oily residue.

6. Forever Black has a UV sun screen to help shield against future fading.

7. Forever Black will restore bumpers, spoilers, mudguards, door handles, body and trim mouldings to a like new condition.

It's quick and easy to use!

do you work for them then ? :augie:lol

No Don't work for them. But they are based at Elford Staffs which is not far from me.

I work for Total Uk, at Kingsbury Oil Terminal Warwickshire.

Directory, should we add our club?

Looking at their site I see that they have a directory section, should we add our club?

Could we negotiate a discount?

Products look good as well, even have marine products.

Re the back to black, my Mav bumpers started life as dark grey not black, would it work on them I wonder?

Hi all,

I apologise for going off track a little and hijacking the thread but i was going to start a new threads on how I can remove the front wings to repair the bubbling which has appeared on both wings, just above the silver trim, at first glance they seem to be bolted on, some info would be most welcomed.

rustygates.

Take front bumper off 1st 2 bolts each side under the arch then the wing is just bolted on

its ok RustyGates.

i had a quick look myself, i could be wrong, but it looks like the arch trim will come off without removing the bumper-not 100% sure yet but it looks that way.

clive i would be tempted to paint it with kurust berfore undercoat.

Arch trim just unscrews the question was about removing the complete wing

aye, lucky for me i only want to remove the trim and fix the bubbly rust in the usual places.

Martin - Kurust i got plenty of, so the plan is to grind it down, kurust it all round where i can (not worried about kurust spoiling the paint) then rub down and spray up. it wont be mint, no point, but it will hopefully be at least smooth, and rust free. Im classing this as a little learning project, as I want to learn a bit about body work repair....
