Just a few opinions of mine on some of the comments left above -
CHEQUE FROM MILLNERS - I've never bought from them nor been paid by them at any point in my life. A member on THIS FORUM pointed out they keep them on the shelf, I personally have not looked in to other suppliers but i'm sure they are out there...
KBEKL - Wrong again pal sorry! The spring becomes weak with use as well as brittle without...
RUSTIC - If its broken you wont be getting drive no matter what you try... just nice crunchy or ratchety noises... Well this is certainly the case for all of the ones I have serviced in the past!
EXTREME 4X4 - Why are your autos filling up with water??? Cos they are fitted wrong! When re-fitting manuals or autos you must put a ring of sillicone around them to make a seal!!!! And also bung them up with as much grease as possible!
And lastly, I'm not trying to premote Millners or anyone else who sells manuals... I'm just offering sound advice based on past experience! I live in one of the most snow hit areas of England, have worked on several farms, had a father who was into off-roading, was nearly born in the back if a Landy lightweight, had my own 4x4 for about 15 years now and have used it on at least a monthly basis for off-road work or playing... oh and Briercliffe is on my doorstep so my motors get some serious abuse! Not just tarmac fairys that only see 4x4 at the sight of a little snow...
I understand all of the points above, but when i've seen so many folk caught out, disappointed they couldnt play, stuck with no 4x4 I can only giggle to myself when they think £150 is too expensive for piece of mind!
My hard lesson for this was my Fourtrak Indy... drove all the way to Nottingham for a weekend of greenlaning with my other club, my auto hubs engaged several times a month and kept well serviced & greased (something else I bet most of you dont do) yet on the first day of laning "click click click click" oh dear no 4x4! Spent the weekend being dragged about by other cars and not very happy!
So I thought for future trips I'll carry a spare set of autos... oh hold on its the same price for a second hand set of manuals as it is autos! Whats the point! Instant solution to unreliability!
You dont have to take the advice, in fact i'm getting a little tired of offering it to be shot down afterwards by SOME people who clearly dont have the experience to back the advice they offer.
Hopefully though I may have helped one person to understand how daft it is repairing or replacing auto hubs. If that has saved that one person from being caught out then i'm happy
Cos I know I'm ok... and its me a lot of local folk call for assistance... :augie
