of course you could select 4wd and engage the auto hubs . then take the rings out.

that way you have fixed hubs . end of the winter pop the rings back in

I am really interested in this one, I carry all the tools for this one, except the knowledge.

So could this be a get you home fix then, all's you need is an M6 Allen key in a 1/2" socket, so remove wheel (if alloy) remove Auto hub, 6 allen bolts,
then what:
How do you engage the hub if it's broken?

This could really help members stuck in the snow,
Could make a great download.

Best regards, Rustic

if you have a look in the download section on the hubs you will notic 2 half circle prongs in side the hub push then with a screw drivers at a diagonal and try to move the lugs at the same time with screw driver

even with break rings out wouldnt going into reverse still force it back as brake rings are only their to engauge them

As I understand it, if you toke the brake rings out you won't get 4wd at all ?

you would as they are their as a break to allow the hub to engage

so if you had them engaged and take them out you would have a locked hub

but unsure if the reverse motion would pop it back into unlocked once this has happened you wouldn't get 4wd until you manually done it

best option just weld the autos locked and never have to worry about it again, ok you would get less mpg and a bit of wear and tear eventually but you wouldnt have to worry about it lol

Just a few opinions of mine on some of the comments left above -

CHEQUE FROM MILLNERS - I've never bought from them nor been paid by them at any point in my life. A member on THIS FORUM pointed out they keep them on the shelf, I personally have not looked in to other suppliers but i'm sure they are out there...

KBEKL - Wrong again pal sorry! The spring becomes weak with use as well as brittle without...

RUSTIC - If its broken you wont be getting drive no matter what you try... just nice crunchy or ratchety noises... Well this is certainly the case for all of the ones I have serviced in the past!

EXTREME 4X4 - Why are your autos filling up with water??? Cos they are fitted wrong! When re-fitting manuals or autos you must put a ring of sillicone around them to make a seal!!!! And also bung them up with as much grease as possible!

And lastly, I'm not trying to premote Millners or anyone else who sells manuals... I'm just offering sound advice based on past experience! I live in one of the most snow hit areas of England, have worked on several farms, had a father who was into off-roading, was nearly born in the back if a Landy lightweight, had my own 4x4 for about 15 years now and have used it on at least a monthly basis for off-road work or playing... oh and Briercliffe is on my doorstep so my motors get some serious abuse! Not just tarmac fairys that only see 4x4 at the sight of a little snow...
I understand all of the points above, but when i've seen so many folk caught out, disappointed they couldnt play, stuck with no 4x4 I can only giggle to myself when they think £150 is too expensive for piece of mind!

My hard lesson for this was my Fourtrak Indy... drove all the way to Nottingham for a weekend of greenlaning with my other club, my auto hubs engaged several times a month and kept well serviced & greased (something else I bet most of you dont do) yet on the first day of laning "click click click click" oh dear no 4x4! Spent the weekend being dragged about by other cars and not very happy!
So I thought for future trips I'll carry a spare set of autos... oh hold on its the same price for a second hand set of manuals as it is autos! Whats the point! Instant solution to unreliability!

You dont have to take the advice, in fact i'm getting a little tired of offering it to be shot down afterwards by SOME people who clearly dont have the experience to back the advice they offer.
Hopefully though I may have helped one person to understand how daft it is repairing or replacing auto hubs. If that has saved that one person from being caught out then i'm happy

Cos I know I'm ok... and its me a lot of local folk call for assistance... :augie

:doh

nowt wrong with that lol :lol:lol:lol

i wouldn't do it personally but do know people who have lol

i know about the spring side of it thats what was wrong with mine

you are correct about the manuals being a more reliable option

and agree if you got them at the same price as the auto's manual all the way

Yeah, but... i've learnt £150 is nothing, not a smidge of an expense compared to some when off-roading is your hobby. So to me cost dont come into it, reliability is worth ten times that amount! :thumb2

I like to know when I call on 4x4 its there! Thats why I dont like vaccum controlled transfer boxes, or electronically selected ones... I like a nice stick to swing on that engages with a clunk and tells me yes you have drive to the front!

hey im not knocking the idea of manuals, if you want them

im just pointing out im a tight arse and wont spend 150.00 on them when i have auto's that work perfectly well.

mine dont fill with water , they were when i bought the truck but i service my hubs and bearings too often to get problems.

i take my truck very seriously love and look after it... in return i get fun and reliability
same as muckypup i guess he has what he prefers too.

christ if we all wanted the same we should have got a landy .

Fair comment! :D Individuality is what seperates us from all the identical green ovals :lol

I just hate seeing folk stuck without 4x4 because of something as simple as a free wheeling hub!

I HAVE bought from them, recommended them too, but wouldnt buy or fix parts that
didnt think were actually broken.

though firm believer in bit of humour, nay gentle sarcasam, lowest form of wit etc.

sorry you missed it, not fan of these smilies to get point across :(!

Sorry! I did miss that, not myself tho got that bloody stomache bug and i'm a bit grumpy at the min

Pissed off to as when I do go out to play I start to feel worse again so have limited time out before I start spewing again :lol
