Fitting roof bars

The Son has bought me a set of standard Nissan roof rails for Xmas
Now how to I fit the things:nenau think I need rivnuts but no idea on what size or how to fit them not offered the rails up to the roof yet as it's chucking it down but will the mounting feet show where they need to go or will I need measurements:nenau Sadly there is some paint pealing on them so will give them a good rub down & respray first just not sure if to keep them black or do them silver to match the truck

Hiya, if you can't get any info tonight I can have a look at mine in the morning and get some info together, I'd have a look now but I don't fancy removing head lining in this weather, wind is strong at mo + raining

Yeah rivnuts are the factory standard way of fitting, can be fitted with removing the headlining but be careful not to go too far with the drill bit.

I got two trucks with them on so again happy to take pics. You'll need ball ended alan keys to reach the bolts to tighten the cable loops.

Rear of rack on mine butts right up to panel gap/rear of roof, this was taken standing on rear bumper step looking down drivers side!

Wasn't sure what rivnuts were, just googled them. Do you mean put them into the roof? I can't see on mine properly right now, but I think it fastens from underneath :nenau

Rivnut were fitted by Nissan for the bars to be bolted to the roof, they are basically a threaded pop rivet which are hidden by the feet of the bars

yes 6mm rivnuts you really need the tool to fit them, I did it the hard way with threaded rod, but it can be hard to stop the rivnut turning, as for lining up tranosaurusdoug gives you the back position, the side is determined by the crease in the roof, the rubbers have a corresponding shape, did you get the bolts and spacers with the rails, you will need them, certainly the spacers as there are several different lengths, the idea is the roof panel does does not take the load the reinforcing below does, Rick

Thanks Rick so it'll be M6 rivnuts I need then ? i'm going to get a tool to make things easier & i'm sure it'll be needed in the future some time. The bars came with the bolts, washers & the rubber spacers/feet:thumbs

by washers do you mean the spacers? they vary from about 5 mm to about 10mm deep, Rick

No there is concaved washers for the bolts so they fit nicely inside the mounting points, only other things apart from the bar which i've just noticed that are shaped at the bottom for the grooves in the roof are the rubber pads

as I suspected that is why I pushed the point, when people remove the bars they assume the spacers are part of the roof/rivnuts, so you will need some tube with a 6mm bore and an outside diameter same as the rivnuts think it is about 12mm from memory, if you do not use the spacers then the first time you load the rack it will push the roof down and the seal will be lost, once you have the rivnut in place you need to cut your tube so it comes flush with the roof, Rick
