Has anybody got some experience with a faulty ECM in a 1998 Y61 2.8TD?

As you can read in two other threads my engine won't start and I just would like to exclude the ECM for the fault list.

Looking in the electrical diagrams the ECM regulates most of the engine parameters. It also controls the NATS immobilizer.

On my car the Tacho comes alive when cranking the car on the startermotor and the NATs red light on the dashboard goes out?

I would expect that if the ECM is faulty then at least the tacho would not come alive. However I might be wrong.

Is there any other indication when the ECM goes walkabout or is it a case of having it tested?

Thanks! :thumbs

My ten cents worth...
I believe your IP is an electrically controlled pump (VP37 type) as opposed to an electronic pump (VP44) as such, there is not a whole lot the ECM can do to the pump.
It has control over the fuel shut off solenoid, which you have effectively removed/bypassed. (be interesting to see how you would stop it if it did start!)

Then the advance solenoid, from which it receives positional feedback from the control sleeve, Timbo can proffer some thoughts on likely hood the non operation of this preventing the engine from starting.

I personally think it ought to start.
The caveat with the control sleeve/advance solenoid operation though is that it requires (self generated) fuel pressure within the IP to operate normally.
As it stands, I think you should see some fuel getting up to the injectors that would allow the engine to start.
I think your idea to have the IP bench tested by a diesel specialist may be the right move.

fault reader

can't you put a fault reader on it,nissan charge about £60 to do it,i tried a few garages to do mine but they could not connect to the car and some could connect but no readings

Thank you both for your replies.

My fuel pump is indeed the V37 the ECM should not have an awfull lot to do with the problem. At least that is one possibility less.

If it does start with no Fuel Cut solenoid then it is just a case of stalling it in 4th gear or if that doesn't work, remove the fuel line from the filter.

Had a chat with a friend who is a plant fitter and he came up with a possible solution. There could be air trapped in the delivery valve of the pump. So I will take those out tomorrow and try again.

If that doesn't work then a trip to a Diesel specialist for a test on the bench is my only other option.

OK, the possibility of an air lock in the pump, unusual, these pumps are pretty good at self bleeding. If I was in your position, i would get a full can of wd40, with the long red extention piece on, while a m8 turns your motor over spray direct into the air intake, don`t stop when the engine fires, just keep spraying until the wd runs out, with this quantity and amount of engine running any airlocks should clear it will also give the pump chance to be loosened up forcefully, now this may not be the kosher way of doing it but I reckon it will give your pump the best chance .
