hello,i have a 2001 2.7tdi,sounds like a bag of nails from cold, oil change never made the slightest difference,i have done 3 at 5k intervals, its well serviced from new(full nissan history).it quietens after a minute or so or driving a short distance. it just cannot be normal,if you had a couple of these starting next to each other then earplugs would almost be necessary.read recently someone mentioning chatter at start up and no. 1 injector with the needle lift sensor( so i thought timing whilst cold),also hear of people adjusting tappets, one person stating the terrano will let you know when it needs its oil changing(noise i guessed).it does sound as though the oil takes its time to get around the top end or anywhere at all for that matter.can anyone help and no guesses please.it drives fine and doesnt use oil.101k mileage.

my truck is noisey when starting from cold, only since i changed no1 injector, a diesel engineer i know told me this was normal, as the timing advances until it warms up, and mine is then quiet, but have you had the oil pressure checked ? personly i dont think you have a problem, the older diesels are noisier than newer engines. :thumb2

i had a thought that if the timing changed when cold and the valves didnt seat 100% due to the tappets needing adjusting then some of the noise could be combustion resonating around the exhaust manifold or inlet.but thats just me guessing!,and hoping for a cure. i just cannot believe that they came out of the factory like this.

what happens is the fuel pump is advanced slightly, which will cause a knock but is normal, and once engine warms up, timing is then retarded, and knock is quieter. i reckon someone will be on who can explain it better, i know how it works, but cant put it into words if you get my drift, if i could i would be writing books. :lol:naughty

yes i can understand the ignition advancing and diesel knock but still think its too loud,or is everyone elses the same?

Guncharmer... shame you aint in West Yorks, you could have had a go in mine to see....

have you tried turning the stereo up? :naughty

i had this with my ford ranger, it had only done 18k with full history and it made me paranoid until one day i was parked next to another and when it started it made the same noise, my advice?, try not to let it get to you!

i have lived with it for nearly a year(since i got it),had a few comments!,then today the bloke across the road ran over looking concerned and said, "bloody hell, whats up with that?" Nowt says I,cold start mechanism advancing the timing and he walked away shaking his head as the noise steadied to normal.it is too bloody noisy though. I am hoping there is a remedy and whilst i expect a different engine noise at cold start up i dont want to be nearly deafened anymore.

The Terrano tends to be noisy compared to the more modern common rail engines

Firstly you have to decide whether it is a diesel knock or something metallic knocking.

Adjust the tappets, as this is a simple job and can rule them out of the equation, if slack they will not only chatter metallically but will slightly alter valve timing because there will be a delay in them opening.
I know on some indirect injection engines (not sure if yours is) there can be issues with the combustion chambers in the head becoming loose and when cold they will rattle, when the engine warms up they expand and go tight in the head.
You may have an injector that is not atomising correctly but this should be accompanied by smoke from the exhaust.
Fuel pump timing is important, although the timing is controlled by the ecu, it is still important to have the pump precisely timed with a DTI gauge. Timing that is set incorrectly just out by a small amount will have no adverse effect in the short term as the advance and retard valve will correct the timing, but this will cause the valve etc to work harder than it should and may not last as long.

Test number 1 injectors resistance through its wiring if ok you can experiment by swapping the wires to it, around, this should have the effect of making a slightly noisier diesel knock

I put some slick 50 oil treatment in mine keeps it a bit quieter and also keeps the engine temp down I put abit in the gear box as well

thanks for that reply toolbox,i am going to adjust the tappets asap and i will ask about locally for getting a dti gauge on the fuel pump.
are you implying that if the no1 injector isnt up to scratch it can cause excess knock, and are there any other symptoms a dodgy one starts causing?
it is crossing my mind that i might have a faulty advance and retard valve if thats possible,is it in the pump or inside the engine bay?

The valve is in the injection pump, it is operated by the low pressure feed side of the pump (a vane pump within the injection pump) and controlled by the ecu that sends pulses to operate it.
I wouldn’t go rushing in to replace the pump at this stage though.

Get a good diesel specialist to have a listen before you go spending money.

Another possible cause for excessive engine noise could be "Gearbox chatter" from the leyshaft. When you start her up and it sounds like VERY noisy tappets , dip the clutch , and if the noise drops to normal cold engine noise, it could be your leyshaft.
Matt.
P.S. I'm no mechanic, just a bodger !!

i just get that noise when the engine and gearbox are nicely warmed through! i have read other members posts that have lived with it 20K miles.the cost of fixing it is about the same as getting a good second hand box fitted(no easy task and costly) so it can chatter away until it goes bang!

If it is a case of "Gearbox Chatter" , how about doing a gearbox oilchange and adding some Molyslip gearbox restorer. You can get lots of advice from Richard at Mrs. Crewchief on Ebay. Just go on to their web-page and send Richard an e-mail at their e-address, or you can phone him. He has an extensive data-base and can advise you on the best product and quantity to use.
Matt.

i did that, best oil and the molyslip, used a tip on here for refillinng the box using a length of hose and a funnel directed up through the engine bay for access. its that chatter when the clutch is out at idle and goes when you dip the clutch.so its a bit of play somewhere, main input shaft bearing, even the clutch release bearing possibly. either involves the gearbox out.10k miles later surprisingly its a touch quieter recently(probably a sign of impending doom!) i jest i hope.

When i started it with 5 inches of snow on the bonnet it was as if someone had waved a magic wand.
Therefore as i have a roll of 1 inch thick soundeadening material i am going to fit it to the underside of the bonnet where there is currently nothing.

Iwas wondering if other terrano`s have some form of material to the underside of the bonnet?

Right, rip it all off and tell me if you think its a bit noisy, only joking of course, mine is a 2 seat commercial so maybe they skimped a bit on building them.
