Right, rip it all off and tell me if you think its a bit noisy, only joking of course, mine is a 2 seat commercial so maybe they skimped a bit on building them.

I think it is probably a bit noisy even with it on but doesn't sound like the noise your describing. Only time I heard a chattering kind of noise like you seem to be describing is from an old fourstroke Honda XL 250 (still have it and its 25 years old) and that is almost definately a top end kind of noise, worn valves or bearing or something like that on the top of the engine.

I know that it's no consolation guys....but I bought a Toyota Land Cruiser around 2 years ago......noise you ain't heard anything, it's like someone shaking a tin box full of spanners, but when warm about 5 - 10 mins and it quietens to spanners wrapped in rags :lol

It's a very common problem with Land cruisers........bet mines louder than yours..:doh:eek:

I used to think my Terrano rattled when cold......it did but not as bad as this thing.

well, with that description i'd have said it was oil and possibly tappets need adjusting OR just an engine flush. The reaosn I say is because our MX6's are similar if you dont use correct oil-bit noisy first thing. As an example, I used to use Magnatec and had no such problems, changed it to a decent synthetic and I now have the problems-not major, but still a bit rattly first thing when its cold.

I think in a diesel it really matters that you have a decent oil because it takes MUCH longer to heat up than a normal petrol car, like mine, so what oil have you used?

Planet 10W-40 SEMI SYNTHETIC from the local motor factors went in mine, changing it every 5K,think i am going to try something else.

i'd try what ever the magnatec version for Diesel is....expensive but worth a try, worked in my V6....

One of Nissans cost-saving things was to remove underbonnet insulation on the MkIII facelift.

My 02 MkIV is a lot noiser than the wifes MkIII - OK she has an autobox which seems to quieten things down a bit but hers sounds like a sewing machine even after 180k miles.

I went to Woolies (the car trim site) and bought some underbonnet felt and heavy duty adhesive which has made a bit of a difference, but they are unavoidable noisy on startup - remember they are an old technology diesel that makes just as much racket when cold as yer average transit of yore used to.

I also have that rattling bloody layshaft thing and am dreading it letting loose but I don't suppose its the kind of thing you can fix easily in isolation and that an exchange box is the way to go?

I have used a couple of tins of additive in the past to good effect (can't remember what it was now but it was specifically for quietning engine noise) but I have also found from experience that plenty of use does help. If you do a lot of short journeys or low mileage generally, it will be worse.

But its a good plan to try and hook up with another local member to compare notes....:thumbs

First thing I noticed with my 3ltr was how noisy it was on start up? to the point where I feel uneasy leaving it run in morning to warm it up and not upset the neighbours.
I also noticed how quite and normal it sounded with a few inches of snow on the bonnet???

mine makes a terrible noise too when cold i start it .. i walk away for five mins and have a cup of tea:) atleast if some one trys to pinch it i will hear it start up from a mile away:thumbs also i have the noise from the clutch gearbox when ticking over.. when the clutch dipped nothing or pick the revs up a touch its gone..........:)

Mk III facelift engine noises -----went to a couple of breakers and got 2 under-bonnet "felt" panels ----nailed them on with some Halfords widgets. Can hear my radio and satnav now. :clap ( Down side--can hear the back seat driver too):naughty
