pah! got my new tail pipe today and attempted to fit it, cant get the damn bolts undone either on the rubber mounting at the back, or on the exhaust join. looks like im going to have to bite the bullet and book the car in for this doing, and a diagnosis for my idle thing with the engine.

unless anyone has soem brilliant tips for the seized bolts?? i already sprayed with duck oil...

im sure someone will correct me if wrong , but i remember someone saying if you heat the bolts up that helps

plus gas is a good penetrating oil.. i got a grinder if you want to cut them:thumb2

It does. I usually have a couple of days spraying a freeing agent on (yes i know its not the best) like wd40 then a quick heat up. Never failed on any bolt theres hope for :thumb2 some will be so corroded they'll shear under any treatment though so be prepared.

If the bolts are 8mm and under tighten and they will shear.

If the bolts are 8mm and under tighten and they will shear. (10mm too but more effort required watch your knuckles)

thanks guys, i just didnt think about the heat-up trick! i dont have a blow torch but ill put that on my christmas list.

Martin has kindly offered to grind the bolts off for me, so thats brilliant. The only issue i can anticipate with this is the rear rubber mounting for the tail pipe. there are two bolts for this, one holding the rubber mounting on, the other holding the tail pipe to the rubber mounting. The bolt for the rubber moutning to vehicle is in an awkward spot, and i doubt it can be ground off, and it may be awkward to grind the other bolt due to the movement of the rubber!! grrrrr.....

as for the join between tailpipe and centre section, appears to be enough room to work with a grinder if needs be, bolts are clearly visible and not obstructed in any way!

Martin, thanks for the offer i really appreciate it, have a look tomorrow, see what you think...

now, as for the bolts, im going to need new ones, just so i can think ahead, does anyone know the correct bolt size??

sorry, i meant the correct length...

well, Martin came down to grind off the bolts last night but space is too restrictive under there. i had a mad panic today and rang round a load of garages booking my car in, but er...changed my mind :(. what ive done is booked it in for Monday at the local garage down my road that i dont 100% trust, and over the weekend, ill have a bash myself using the plusgas Martin left for me.

i realised that i was panicing too much ringing round trying desperately to get the car booked in when i didnt need to, i'll end up dropping myself right in it if im not careful. Actually, i didnt BOOK the car in to be fair, just said id pop down, so thats not too bad.. I dont trust too many garages you see, and havent used one for a LONG time apart for MOT. the one i do trust is busy and booked up for a MONTH, all the other can do it immediately, which actually bothers me in a weird way cos why arent they too busy? lol

anyway, i had food and calmed myself down and realised i need to chill out and have another bash myself this weekend, and if that fails, the garage that can do it is only down the road and worst case is they will charge an extortionate amount for the job, we will see lol

unfortunatly all good garages are busy and cowboys dont get the work.. i did put plus gas on yesterday so give it some more today and see how you fair tomorrow, i dont think it will be easy but good luck

Cheers Martin, I'll do just that. I'm gonna have another go over the weekend, and I'm hoping to borrow my mates blow torch too, if I can do it myself great, if not then I've got it booked in Monday down the road.

Also I rand feather diesel, £65+ vat for diagnosis, after that any quotes firvrepairs includes that cost...
I dint know any better, so going to book it in with them next week...

I got a quote from quickfit, for £55 for tail pipe fitted, bought it for less and fitted it myself, 1 bolt came undone easily, other bolt sheared off, but you must ensure you have a socket on each side of the bolt, or you will put the rest of the exhaust under stress. An 18 inch bar/socket works on the 8mm bolts to shear them.

You can get nut splitters, but these only work if you can get to the whole face of the nut, some exhausts have recessed flanges.

exhuast nightmares

That's why I go to an Exhuast Centre because they deal with rusted bolts everyday and not only know the tricks but will often have the ability to re-thread broken bolts with a decent sized replacement bolt for little if no extra charge.

Your tale of woe took me back to my Opel Manta GT/E days in 1990 when I purchased a complete new exhuast from my local car parts wholesaler at a bargain price.

The front pipe was held on with 6 bolts as it was a twin front pipe arrangement. 4 bolts came out simples one snapped off and the 6th was missing/sheared.

I ended up having to take the inlet manifold off where I had a similar problem with the manifold bolts !

Two days and lots of skinned knuckles later and the front pipe was on. Then I could not get the rear box over the axle until I had jacked it up to a dangerous height using a combination of my mates two ramps and an array of borrowed bottle jacks.

Finally got it all done and since that day(s) I have never fitted my own exhuast again. To add insult to injury the system lasted 1 year and 1 day. I then had Challenger Exhuasts put on a decent Aluminised replacement for 50p more than the first system !!

Happy days !!

well, my fall back plan is in place, booked in down the road at the local garage (i imagine a larger than normal bill from them, we shall see).

ive done back box before, on my girlfiends renault 5. had no trouble with it at all, but the bolts on my Mav are very tight, i wouldnt say rusted, but certainly tight and its very awkward trying to loosen them laying down!

tried again just now, no joy. part of the issue here is leverage, im laid under the car and a standard socket wrench isnt long enough, and my long bar is, well, too long!

looks like i will have to take the hit with the local garage, i just hope they dont try and rip me off because if they charge me anything over £50 im going to have to kick off.

it wont cost that with your own parts, but clean the knuckle dusters off just incase mate:D
