Hi all my turn for a change lol,

Black smoke and slight loss of power now and again, like i say only now and again it happens (once or twice a day maybe) normal shut throttle off at island or junction etc, re apply throttle amd looks like an old battle cruiser on the high seas lol going in for the kill lol, quick kick down and it clears,

Ok most of you know my motor, 60 odd on the clock 2.7td auto mistral 1995, k & N filter, 2 x hiclones, both main fuel filter and aux inline filter changed the other day to see if they were blocked, full bottle of redex on half a tank of fuel but still not difference, no diesel leaks, no air hissing or sucking, i have the EGR valve blocked off for the past 3yrs now but maybe a bit suspect actually, may have to remove and blank it off to eliminate this theory.

tappets are getting a bit noisy so will be done sat morn,
mini fuel filter will be also done sat morn,
check for air sucking in just in case also on sat morn,

so looking for any suggestions please,

thanks rob

I still think that from previous threads on similar problems that we are all using a percentage of bio diesel in the fuel without knowing it.
This I think is clearing all the gunge from the fuel lines and blocking the fuel filters.
Mine has a minor hesitation when pulling away slowly, and soon I will replace the fuel filter and clean the mini filter. I have tried adding the additives to the fuel, next will be the one you put in the filter directly, if someone can advise what it is.
Shark1e, where did you get your fuel filter from ?
That fast cars in Bloxwich that you recommended for the gear oil was cheap and good service.
If the problem is only soon after the engine is cold then I would go for the glow plugs.
Failing that it could be one of the temperature sensors, either faulty or poor connection, it could be over fuelling thinking the engine is colder than it is.

it has been in the colder mornings etc a bit lumpy idling after starting so did consider the plugs, they were new approx june 2004 so not had a bad run if they have gone.

may go up fastcar and get some sat morn.

Shark1e,

Check the waist gate valve on the turbo is not sticking open; you should be able to get a small adjustable on the valve lever on the turbo and move it too and fro.

I personaly would start with the plugs, it sounds as though it is not burning enough fuel, you can try a trick I was tought, in neutral bring the revs up to about 2000 for about 10 secs, if the smoke fades or disapears gradualy it is a sign it is burning the excesive unburnt fuel, if not I am not sure.

not smoking by just revving, only when driven and shutting off revs at islands etc, and then not all the time,

ooooops well not good now, snapped a new glowplug in the hole :( tried to drill half way down glow plug and use a reverse extractor but also snapped that in the newly drilled hole,

Many thanks to hodgy who has offered to come to mine and lend me a hand to try and get the plug out etc,

also many thanks to biffa for the offer of a replacement cylinder head should it need it,

what a great club

Not having much luck with it are you matey, heres hoping that things improve :|

Just had a thought,
Try breaking up the extractor with a long thin tapered dot punch,
grind the tip so it's really sharp, line it in the centre and give it a good tap,
(extractors are very brittle and shatter easily)
If there is a lot of the extractor stuck in the glow plug or your a bit worried about it getting shoved further down the glow plug hole, get a Dremel and a dental burr, (easy to buy burrs on the net) grind it right down then try tapping it with a dot punch it should be thin enough to shatter, then pull pieces out with a strong magnet,
No worries about the head it's there if you need it.

decided to remove intake manifold off head and attempt collection via magnet, should any bits fall through into squish chamber, no good through as you can't get to the glowplug through the inlet port,

next try will be to remove the injector and feed the this magnet tool down the injector hole and then start the drill out process, but if all else fails i will remove head and take it from there,

if then looking too expensive i'm afraid it will be a case of breaking it up for bits and call it a day.

will update soon as i can get a socket big enough to remove the injector.

thanks

shark1e

What size socket? Most diesel fitters have them in massive sizes, sure somebody could help? I have them up to 30mm. Happy to send any I've got.

SOCKET SIZE FOR INJECTOR

HI SHARK1E.
remember i had an injector come loose just had it out wire brushed threads and refitted top of injector is 19 mm and bottom is 22mm
DEEP SOCKET.
when you take injector out all you are left with is a hole at the bottom with a copper washer about 3/8 ins. which i think leads into the swerle chamber.
BEST OF LUCK WITH THIS.

hi all, tried to remove head today, inlet manifold is off, exhaust manifold and turbo is undone but can't budge the three bolt flange on the down pipe to allow the turbo to come away from the head,

so it's a sad day as the icon that started this great club is going to be broken up as i have lost faith in getting it back on the road, either my head needs drilling and poss helicoiling or a complete replacement working head,

i don't have the money to spending loads on it so i think the best option is to break the mistral up now,

i have many parts on it that may be of use to members, stainless steel rear logo wheel cover with two keys,

4 x pro comp shocks and rear pro comp springs,

roof rails

2 x hiclones to fit the non TDI diesel

1 x non TDI K&N filter only 2 months old etc

battery less than 12 months old

Rear boot spoiler

pair of chrome folding and tilt adjust door mirrors (grade B not broken but chrome slighty scratched etc)

AVM manual locking hubs less than 12 months old as new

16" steels x 4 with 2 kelly safaris muds 245/75-16 not even half warn loads of trad left, 2 x bfg muds starting to go low on innner and outer edges due to under inflation,

also all main vehicle bits available,

My cherished registration plates N44 LWB as most will have seen i have a small x in between the two 4's nice plate for a navara, T2, Patrol, Pathfinder or any nissan LWB

or the other option is to make me an offer for the whole motor as it is. Taxed till end of september 2007 and MOT till march 2008.

any interest please ring me on 07886 453230

Thanks Rob
