Engine running rough, stuttering

I hope this is not the end of my terrano but I am fearing the worst.

For the past 2 weeks the engine has lacked power in 3rd gear and has been a but stuttery.

decided to change the air and fuel filter to see if that had any affect, well it has not and now the problem has got worse.

2nd gear is by far the worst, very stuttery, when you accelerate the engine stuuters and lots of smoke comes out the exhaust, mush the same in the rest of the gears but less smoke. %th is the best if I can get it there but its not right.

Any suggestions what this may be and how to fix?

First unplug maf. If same not that.

Also look at air getting into fuel line

are the revs limited or will it rev up

The engine idles fine and will also rev when not in gear it's only when you are driving that it happens.

Like Zippy I'm thinking MAF.

Maybe check the patrol4x4.com and nissanpatrol.au forums as I see you've got the 3.0 engine.

So how do I check the maf ?
Surely if I just unplug it and drive around it will make no difference ?

If the MAF is NOT the problem then you should notice a big difference when you unplug it.

If you unplug it and there is no change then you know your MAF is goosed :thumb2

if that checks out ok i would check the wastegate on the turbo, i think another member had a similar problem and found that all jammed in the open positon causing power loss

Surely easier just to unplug the MAF and see if it runs rougher or not. If there's no change the MAF is not working :nenau

The smoke is grey colour and running it on normal diesel.

Yeah don't fret, chances are the fix will be an easy one, maf might cost you a few bob, got mine for 85 quid I think, or there abouts I think we share the same maf :thumb2

Do the 3.0s have a mini filter? And again what colour is smoke? :thumb2

Your correct there Alex:thumbs fault codes are easy to read:augie has there been any mods to the engine like ERG blanked ?

If it is maf sensor contact these guys and guy genuine Bosch, don't get chinease crap. I was tempted for the price but reading reviews they can go wrong a few months in
