Hi All, My r20 Terrano2/Mistral 1995 has developed a bit of a weird anomaly, being that it randomly stalls after a cold start, for instance, today I fired up the truck after being dormant for 2 weeks she started fine I drove away, I dont thrash it, got about 100 meters up the road, it started losing power and quickly stalled, then it took me maybe 2 trys before she fired up again, held down the accelerator half way she sorta stumbled and then cleared up and ran normally again, it was running fine before that from start up no power problems or any hints of an issue prior to the loss of power then stall??

Ive also noticed that some times that when I start it on a hill that's not all too steep ( full fuel tank ) that she will start fine, idle for a bit then start idling funny, lose power and stall again, sometimes i can play with the accelerator and get her to run smooth and idle fine again and then I don't have that same issue again for about a week, is this the injector pump at fault?? is there any way to test this??

first thing I would check is the fuel filter, sounds like fuel starvation.

Fuel starvation agreed.:thumb2

The fuel pump is on the engine, non in the fuel tank, so any leak or poor seal will allow air in.

There is a manual pump button on the fuel filter housing, you could try pumping this a fair few times, it should go hard.
Some fuel filters are poor, and don't seal on the face.
There could also be a leaking fuel hose, anywhere between the fuel tank and the engine.
There is an inspection panel under the rear carpet so you can access the fuel tank sender, where the fuel pipe and return go.
Inspect the fuel pipe looking for any leaks, as many members on here have had to replace the length of both the feed and return.

agree fuel starvation ...... also check it has a mini filter fitted ...... take out and clean :thumb2

Change the pipe before the fuel filter for a clear piece of pipe and check for air bubbles :nenau

id go for the cheap and simple stuff first ..... change fuel filter / air filter :thumb2

stalling td

I had a similar issue recently it was the fuek filter and a little water in the diesel.
A friend of minehad the same issue - we put it down to supermarket diesel

paulp

I replaced the Fuel filter, feels a bit better but still got a bit of a hesitation issue, like i have no power from idle to around 1500 rpm its like it flat lines then suddenly has power, I have replaces some of the fuel lines, yet to check the tank lines though, still gotta get to the inspection plate.

Good luck with getting those screws out without them shearing!!!

Give them a good dosing of lubricant and be gentle, hopefully the climate out there has been kinder to your bolts :thumb2

Ill have to pay mind that that, is it under the rear flat bed or under the rear seats?

These symptoms are similar to when the crankshaft position sensor begins to fail also, but as stated earlier start with the easy & work up

Lift the rear boot carpet and there should be a black inspection plate bolted down with 4 bolts, remove these and then you'll see the tank with the pickup and return lines etc

You'll have to undo all of the bolts on that collar that you can see, I recommend an extension bar and a flexible head on the end and go gentle

I should have some pics

So while at work I quickly pulled the inspection plate off and had a quick look, the hoses look fine, though also in saying that, i cannot be sure as the pipes are caked in this thick black greazy stuff, so ill have to get a good degreaser and give it a reall good clean before i proceed.

Good lad, keep the plate off while the weather is good and every time you leave the car standing soak the nuts in the penetrative oil of your choice.

Then go dead gentle on the nuts with a socket set and extension bar

Right, so i got the fuel pickup out of the tank, looked dirty so cleaned it up and made sure there where no blockages, and put it back in, so its not there thats causing the issue, though when i looked int he tank i expected to find a tank filled with our purple diesel, but instead found blackness and lots of it, doesnt look like diesel bug to me, but dont know what would cause this, the fuel looks dirty... In the mean time i filled it back up and put a fuel treatment in, so we will see how it fairs after a tank of this has run through

Sounds like someone has tried running it on engine oil to me :augie

What's the legalities of that in New Zealand
