I know it will have been covered before but how much engine oil goes I a r20 2.7 td and which oil would be recommended.apparently need to change oil and filter before I put my recon turbo on

I have been using 15w/40 mineral oil. It has been discussed on here many times about mineral vs Semi synthetic and fully synthetic.

The general concensus is that the synthetics cause the engines to burn oil and that oil levels drop. When Mineral oil is used the oil stays level.

7 litres is required for a change. As I change my oil every 6 months I buy one of those 20 litre drums from eurocar parts for £42, it makes it much cheaper over the long run. Oil filter should be about £3.

My t2 takes one gallon and one litre(Gallon =4.54609.Semi synthetic.Don't forget to put oil in your oil filter I usually half fill it.But i am sure you know that:)

I had an oil/filter change done by a Spanish garage last year and oil consumption shot up - found out they had put in synthetic.
I drained it, put in 7ltrs of supermarket mineral 15/40, oil consumption back to where it used to be i.e. uses none!
My advice would be to stick to ordinary mineral, these engines are very unsophisticated and agricultural and the only gain to be had by using synthetic is to the oil companies profits.

I use 10/40 or 15/40 Castrol mineral or semi synthetic, depending when it is on special offer at Tesco, Asda or the like.

7 litres, with oil filter change, BUT when you have put in 6 litres, start checking the dip stick, as not all the old oil actually comes out:doh.

I have never managed to use 7 litres per oil and filter change, and I have had my Mav over 18 years, and never needs topping up in between changes.

best regards,

Rustic

I have fully synthetic 10 or 15w40 in now, done about 4000 miles and the level on the dipstick has gone down a few mm - so it's not used much.

I always use 10/40 mineral as mine burns it like billy o if I put semi synthetic in.

15w40 semi, cheapest I can find. Uses none whatsoever

Not bad for 151k :)

10w40 is the problem, not the semi synthetic

15/40 mineral oil! burns not a drop in any T2 i have used it in :thumb2

Had some nasty experiences with fully synthetic in a T2 :doh

So the 5W30 fully synthetic I get for free would be no good then :)

yes, pour it straight in the fuel tank! if you use it in the engine in this weather be prepared to top up a bout a pint every 50 miles! :doh

trust me I've done it!

it is like water ! The Volvo loves it...

I guess I'll have to start paying for my oil at work then :(

it worked for me in a T2 in the winter but as the weather warmed up it used more and more!

I have had this discussion before... in my owners manual, it states that 5w30 is preferable, I use 10w40 in mine.

we dis talk about this before, i remember getting my manual out hold on i have it right here . . .

5w 30 only at temps below 15C and own to -22

15 w 40, 10w 450 or 15w 50 across the whole temp range (down to minus 4)

10w 40 for -4 to +30 degrees

and i don't like synthetic oils, they are cheap and cheerful yes but they aren't real oil! it's like putting marge on your toast instead of butter :augie

I know, we had quite a discussion about it didn't we and I did check mine again and it still says that :lol

Margarine or butter...I don't have bread any more, so can't do toast, but my choice would be butter ;)

I can spare you a slice :thumbs

I use 10/40 Castrol Diesel B4 in my 1999 T2. It does not eat much if anything at all between the oil changes. I have about 6500km since the last change and will change oil and filter one of the days.

PS. Never heard that i should actually put oil in the filter as well when changing??
