Hi all. Not a clue where to start with this one so any advice will be most welcome. I have a Terrano 2 2.7TD 1998 reg. The previous owner rewired the starter motor to a button after having issues with the barrel. It's work fine for the 12 months I've owned it until now. When I turn the ignition on the dash lights up as normal, but when I turn the starter motor all the electrics trip. If I leave it for a few minutes, or disconnect & reconnect the battery, everything comes back on. Any suggestions where to start please?

Sounds like the initial problem was the switch located and operated by the ignition barrel which is an easy fix. So seen as you are having problems can you return it o stock perhaps?

Also sounds daft but check the main battery terminals and battery leads as the cables become fatigued and break. Think there's a download in the quick links section regarding this subject.

Thanks, I've checked battery & terminals. It happened a few days ago and I noticed the small wire to the starter motor had come loose. When I reconnected it all worked well. Now it's doing it again. I'm also puzzled as to why everything trips out and is completely dead for a few minutes.

I think the ignition barrel wasn't the original fault. It does seem like a bad connection where there is enough current to supply the ignition system but when the starter motor needs serious current the voltage collapses. The tripping out is of serious concern as it seems to suggest a thermal fault where a connection is resistive and overheating, when it cools it will restore to its original condition .

Starter Motor / pre-engaged solenoid type ?

Only a thought but if the original fault was that the ignition switch would not operate the starter and to force this operation the start position of the switch has been overridden by using a button this might point to the starter motor or its link to the solenoid being at fault.

Might be the starter motor was faulting / shorting inside the windings or rotor and high load has burnt out the ignition switch connections and now it's doing the same to the direct button.

The starter motor doesn't get its current from the switch, it is indirectly coupled by the solenoid.

Even if the motor went short and burnt out the heavy wiring from the battery to the solenoid, the ignition switch would be unaffected.

All the switch is doing is supplying a small current to a coil inside the solenoid.

The coil becomes a magnet when you key the switch and this pulls the big contacts together which connect the battery to the motor. In the olde days you could press a button on top of a solenoid which would do the same thing as the coil moving the contacts.

I think this fault is corroded or dirty connections in the heavy wiring from the battery to the solenoid to the motor.....

electrics tripping out

Hi i had a similer problem with my starter i put another earth from the starter securing bolts to step bolt that cured that problem. But now i,m having the same thing as you but ithink it is the starter as i have a deep cycle battery on that is showing full charge ,but turns slow. It has given good service for 5 years so thats the next job on the list but try the earth any way.
