just been looking at ignition barrels on ebay:eek:
daft price for second hand.
what I want to know is if I fitted another complete unit with transponder and key to suit would I still have to get it coded to the ecu on my truck:nenau

You sure you need a ignition barrel? Do you mean ignition switch blackplate thing?

You can actually bin the switch completely and just go push button start. Then just use your key to activate the transponder doda :thumb2
Do you have a big bunch of keys by the way ? I had key switch issues years ago and all sorts of nonesense ensued but not cutting out once started. That's why I thought nats issue, but if your slot is very slack then perhaps a big bunch could possibly turn it off  ooo er missus :lol

I thought once the vehicle was started you can remove the key from the immobiliser reader thing it would still run.

I'm pretty sure I did that when I remove the switch backplate from the barrel to troubleshoot switch problems. I'd put the key in the barrel to unlock steering, activate the immobiliser and start it with a screwdriver

the key is really sloppy in the barrel.can get it about half way out while its running.
cant get it to cut out like it did the other day though.
not got a big bunch of keys just car key and a couple of smaller keys.

I think to eliminate the transponder thingy I'd take the switch off the back of the barrel. Then start as normal with your key in the slot and use screwdriver to start. Then when running, take the key out and away from the transponder. see if it cuts out then.
My old nats is so unwired at the mo I can't remember what the light sequence is so suck it and see I guess :thumbs

just been fiddling about on my break:naughty.think the switch on bottom of barrel is on its way out because I had it running with the lights, heater and wipers going and if I just touch the key and move it slightly it turns everything electrical off but the engine keeps running.

Yerp that's classic switch failure
So could the cut out thing be a red herring :nenau

It also puts the revs up to about 1000 rpm. Key operated hand throttle :thumbs:lol
35 quid for the nissan one or a tenner for the launch control one off eBay :lol

Aha problem solved then? :nenau :thumb2

Hopefully mate.
Will get a new one ordered today:thumb2

Hopefully got this sorted out now.
New ignition switch fitted and I finally found anther branch of where I got battery from so got them to test it and it was no good.
Only measuring 600 cold cranking amps and should be 800 so swapped it for a new one:thumb2

for future reference you can fit a new barrel and key, but just remove the red part from the new key and replace it with the one from your old key, there are a couple of different shapes though, and you will need to keep your old key for the door, Rick

Still don't explain the issue I had with it stalling ,but at least the battery and switch are sorted.
Alternator checked out fine as well so not much else I can do but wait and see.

Hi.

Have you sorted out this problem?
I was going to start my 97 Terrano this morning at nothing.
The fan, lights and stereo work fine but NOTHING happened when i turned the key. No crank, no dimming of the lights.
Just fitted brand no high quality batteries last week with new quality terminals.

Hope you have located the problem ;)

since fitting the new switch on the bottom of the ignition barrel all has been fine(touch wood)
if you have recently had new battery and cables/clamps I would just double check that everthing is stil nice and tight.
Also check the main fuses in the engine bay.

you have answered one of my next questions:thumb2
have got some blanks to get cut for a couple of spare keys so I will try this.
Thanks rick:cool:

Sortet out this problem.
Bad connection at the starter. Probably dirt.

All working now :thumbs
