Battery check, turn headlight on, crank motor, if lights disappear then low voltage, it lights remain bright dodgy starter or something.

I don't think battery is issue as it fired up fine then died, it takes a lot of voltage to initially crank over these lumps.

I reckon a knackered/frayed wire somewhere or loose connection :thumb2

I'm thinking it's something along those lines as well mate.
Going to give the cables/ connections a check over this morning.

gotta be a good place to start, you are pretty competent so should hopefully be an easy fix. Prob just hiding out of view somewhere buried in mud :augie

Read this whole thing again and I've changed my mind, I think you have multiple issues here, battery deffo sounds kaput to me but I can't put my finger on why it keeps cutting out after it's been started

Charged battery overnight,re fitted and started up no problems this morning.
Pulling just under 12 volts while cranking with glow plugs also drawing current.
That's the bit what's got me how it started then cut out.
Had a good check along the cables for any breaks/damaged insulation but can't see or feel anything.
Checked them for continuity while wiggling and twisting the cable and reading fine.
Beginning to think it might be an immobiliser/nats gremlin.

I'm prob wrong with this but could it be an iffy connection onto the injection pump only thing I can think of apart from the alarm system that could shut down the engine whilst running:nenau

Do bare in mind checking the voltage immediately after a start will not give a proper reading as the power to fire up will have dropped off the voltage somewhat, I don't think the starter is knackered personally, I may be wrong but it doesent fit bill :nenau

Gotta check those cables first tho :thumb2

I checked the voltage while it was cranking.
Got my daughter to start it while I had the tester on the battery.

Just been out for a run about 10 miles all on duel carriage way.started and drove fine but when I turned off the ignition I got the beep you get when you first turn ignition on.never done that before :nenau

I'd be having a look see around your ignition switch and the chip aerial thingy.

Suns meant to be out today dude, hopefully you find an easy fix :D :thumb2

Think I might have found the problem.
The key is really sloppy in the ignition barrel.
Having a brew then going to take the switch off the bottom of it and give it a clean up.

Stripped out the switch from bottom of ignition barrel and it does feel a bit worn when turned with a screw driver.
Still can't get it to replicate what it did the other day.
Barrel and key are really worn,I can almost get the key out while it's running:eek:
