heres a weird one for you.
just jumped in the terrano, started up and drove home with no problems.
left for 30 mins, jumped back in started up,ran for about 10 seconds, died and now the thing wont even turn over like the battery is flat:nenau
checked the connections are tight on the battery and they are so all I can think of is a short or broken wire somewhere.

Try the little wire that goes to starter motor they can carrode up

will have a look when I get home from work cheers:thumb2

Smells a lot like the old worn ignition barrel issue to me!!!!

Does it work with a spare or when you jiggle it around

Had one before with the dodgy switch and totally different symptoms to this.
Not ruling it out but would that cause it to stall after a few seconds of starting fine.
When the switch went on my other one once you had done the gentle key jigging it would start and run fine.
The truck turned over fine, started then stalled. Tried to re start and it turned over very slow and the interior lights dimmed as did the dash lights.

Connections on battery (+ and -)
Connections on starter
Starter is broken
Or battery is broken (Alternator could not be charging it?)

I'd have a go at bridging the gap of the solenoid with a old spanner to make it turn over (make sure the vehicle is in neutral!)

Just logic...
If it was running or 10 seconds and then stops, then it can't be the starter motor, or the wire running to it.

What it could be, is the ignition switch, as already mentioned, messing with the switch at various times during engine running may then stop the engine.
Try this two or three times... and if it stops the engine, then replace the contact block on the switch, available as just that, from Nissan dealer.:thumb2

Replaced battery, leads and clamps last year.
going to change the earths from engine and alternator to body just as a matter of cause.
Funny thing is I just got in from work, tried truck and started first time.:nenau
Putting 14 volts in from alternator while running and dropping to 9 volts on starting.

It doesn't stop it turns over like a flat battery.

My money is on the starter, same happened to me. One day it was fine next would barely turn over.

Broken starter will pull crazy amps, which the battery can't provide!

But a dodgy starter won't make the engine cut out after it has started up & running wonder if the immobiliser had a wobble & shut everything down:nenau

Maybe if the starter sprocket was still engaged?

Immobilizer the engine will still turn over like normal just not open the solenoid for fuel.

9v is too low for the crank voltage, some of the cells in the battery are dead

It will be going back then as it's not been on a year yet and it's got a 3 year warranty on it.
But would that cause it to stall.definatly wasn't me stalling it as it's an auto and wasn't even in drive:nenau

if the battery has gone short inside I guess it could as even with the alternator charging it could pull the voltage down, but pretty rare for a battery to do this, but none the less possible, best way to check is try another battery, if you do not have a second care then borrow a battery, Rick

easy to get the battery checked, just take it back they hook it to a machine that simulates a start load and checks the amps that are kicking out

dont forget its not just the starter motor drawing current on a diesal you have your glowcoils as well and if the amps are too low its will affect them as well making starting harder

but he has no car? unless he has a second one, then it will be easy to pull the battery and test it out, Rick

But this happened while the engine was still warm.
This morning when it was started from cold it was fine.wasnt lazy and fired up straight away as normal.been stood for 5 hours and started fine also.
Did a couple of miles, parked up was left for 30 mins.started fine but then stalled after about 10 seconds.tried to re start and the starter was turning really slow and all the dash lights dimmed like when trying to start with a flat battery.
Left it for about another 4 hours while I was at work.came home tried it and it turned over fine and started and run as normal.
This is why it's puzzling me .

OK well the next thing that comes to mind is a main battery positive cable rubbed through the insulation and shorting at some place intermittently, that is why I suggest trying another battery, Rick

What about NATS ? Is the red light flashing like it should when this happens ?
Just wondering if your key chip thing is giving up ?

Didn't look at the immobiliser light when it happened.
Will have a look at it tomorrow when I put the battery back on as it's on charge at the moment.

Problem I have with taking it back to shop is I only have 1 car, this one on the road at the moment.
Have got a battery from a ford ka but don't think it will be big enough to start it.
Also the shop I got it from has changed ownership so don't know if they will honour purchases from before they took over.
