Hi all,

I'm having trouble tracking down the exact location of the ECU (Or as the workshop manual calls it,the ECM?)

The manual, seems to indicate that it's behind the center console around the area of the ash tray maybe, but others seem to think it's maybe under the front passenger seat.I cant see anything under the seat other than a metal shield & some cables that go into the seat.

Any help would be great thanks. This is an ongoing issue that has both proved costly & time consuming as it shows up as a TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) fault, so i got a new pedal assembly & had it fitted, code came up again a few weeks later, and then nothing for a month or so & then started again, also dropping the car into limp home mode.

Mechs cant find anything wrong, it's run on various diag machines, some clear & some with the TPS error. So we are at a point where we want to locate the ECU & work back etc with wires.

Thanks again for your help folks.

you do not give the year but on my 98 it is in front passenger footwell, Rick

There are 2 things, but I am not sure which is which.

One is under a metal panel in the passenger foot well... literally where their feet go, in the bit where it bends from the floor up to the fire wall.

The other is behind the radio, on the dash dial side... I think you can only get to it by removing the apron under the steering wheel. This is also something to do with the alarm, so might not be the ECU.

In my '96 Facelift 2.7TDi it was underneath the armrest behind the handbrake

Are you sure, cos it is a bit big for that area, I think you have mistaken it for air bag unit, yellow plugs will be the give away, Rick

Rick, it's a good job you're on the ball because I've been a right numpty again!!!!! Yes what I was referring to was the Airbag module

Mine was indeed in the passengers side footwell

Well on my maverick its defo in in the centre tucked in where the ash tray is, but getting access to it is another thing:eek:

yep my off road Mav is the same, seems Mavs use Zexell pumps and Hitachi Maf's so there are variations, Rick

Mine is in the centre console, just above the small storage pocket at the bottom. They are a right pain to get at and get out.

As far as I remember it was held in with four 8mm or 10mm nuts on the top of the ECU, a combination spanner worked best, and where I could get to it, a ratchet spanner worked.

Radio, ash tray and all the centre console up to and including the air vents has to be removed. You will at the least have to slacken off the lower console (the one that has the middle arm rest on), or best to take it out completely.

Be careful with the plastics, they can be brittle!:doh

Sorry for the late reply folks, I was rushed off on a job at short notice & I've been offline really since!

Took the car along to my local Bosch approved specialist to look over her & the kit came back with no faults, so we left access to the ecu for now. He advised we take it to the dealer so they can hook it up with their software as it's more in depth etc

They also came back clear too, so bloody odd one this! No faults of late, so fingers crossed.

Thank you all again for your time & help. It's greatly appreciated.

I guess you have a Bosch pump and MAF, if so the throttle assembly is different to the Zexell, you need to check that when you changed the assembly that you did indeed change it all, Rick
