Hi Lads and Lassies

Have not posted anything on the forum for a while but I wanted to share my experience of changing the oil filter.
As many of you probably know its a sod to get at from inside the engine bay...quite low down...stuff in the way...ect

I know folks have posted different methods they have used and mine is not really anything new but this is how I did it.

I chose the removal of near side front wheel. From inside the engine bay I knocked out the rubber wheel arch skirt clips with a small hammer...just a wee tap...not all of them just the five or six closest to the oil filter...this allows you to 'fold' the rubber skirt down to give plenty of room to reach the filter...no need to unclip it along its whole length.

Now folk use a variety of tools to loosen off the old filter...chain oil filter removal tool and the like...But give this a try before using any tool..the filter should really be on hand tight if fitted properly.....I cleaned of as much gunk from the old filter as I could with a rag...then I got hold of it and attempted to turn with my hand...bingo...of it came no bother at all.

This was the first time I had changed the filter and before attempting any job for the first time I am apprehensive....needn't have been..it was a breeze to do as it turned out.

Put on new filter and tightened to spec...so it should be no bother the next time I do it.

The difference an oil change has made is considerable....smoother, quieter engine.

Removing the road wheel gives you all the room you need to get to the filter easily...once loosened you can ease it up into the engine bay to get it out..new filter goes in from above too...locate and tighten from the wheel arch.

Hope this is useful to anyone thinking of an oil and filter change.

I was quoted £50-60 to do this simple job by Budget Tyres and Exhaust place.

i seem to remember one of my mates back in the late 70s just sticking a bluddie big screwdriver straight through the oil filter to remove it :lol

ronypony, hope you had an axel stand there and not just a jack..

briggie, ive done that way too, but always on some one elses drive!! makes loads of mess!

brilliant, i had planned to do mine later this year, so will use this guide, can it go in the downloads??

A little trick if you hands start slipping get a old sanding belt off a belt sander turn it inside out, so the rough side is inside.
Slip the belt over filter and squeeze tight while undoing the filter.

The rough sand belt surface grips the filter ;)

I found it quite hard to get at the oil filter, so i just stabbed it with a flat head and took it off,

but i might of fluffed putting the new one, as it was pissing oil out here and there, it is all in my "living with the T2" thread

I have changed the oil filter twice now and I also remove the front wheel. On both occasions I could not loosen the filter by hand, but found that you can use a soft hammer and long screwdriver to gently drive the filter round by tapping gently on the bit at the top of the filter where the seam is formed.

It's a bit of a variation on the pushing a screwdiver through the filter body, but if for any reason you can't move it, you can still drive it.

Exactly what i did after trying the filter grabber tool i have, then the gator grip thing for really tight stuff,

hammer and long flat blade driver :thumb2

Always wary of the method shoving driver all way through, if the metal shreds filter to bits - still got bit stuck to engine and chance of bits falling into oil ways. if its really stuck - pay mechanic:(

ps changed my filter by going through the wheel arch - loads more access

Just done mine, cost £32 including oil and filter. No need to take off the wheel just lock over the steering, clips just pull off and push back, if you have long arms it helps. the TDi filter is larger than the TD so you may have to lift it out through the bonnet after you have unscrewed it through the wheel arch. regards bri

I'm of the 'wheel off to get acess' brigade. makes sense, ok, requires a trolley jack and axle stand but the hassle's worth it. You can check brakes, bushes etc while you're under there as well...........
In the year I've had the T2, I've done 3 oil changes, each time, the filter has unscrewed, not easily but it does come off.........

my oil costs me £10.00 for semi synthetic, and £8.00 for the filter. and yes, that's trade.......

Yes Zippy m8 I..always ...always....always use axle stands when working under any part of a vehicle....

Many moons ago I stupidly got under an old Cortina held up with just a jack...as I crawled out from underneath it it fell off the jack...omg..what a lucky escape I had...I have never ever made the same stupid mistake again m8...

lol ,

i did the same with a kit car..

just got out, and it droped, ... tow bar hit the back of my hand, it wend BLACK!!! was in hospital A&E for ages!!..

Axle stands never seem that stable to me, especially when you are wobbling the vehicle trying to loosen a tough nut/bolt etc. I prefere to use some big offcuts of railway sleepers piled on top of each other. I will often leave the jack in there as well.

Where to buy a good oil filter from?

Rather than start a new thread, where is the best place to get an oil filter, I used to get them from Halfords HOF 205 I think, but they don't seem to have them listed anymore.
I have read other web pages and they rate the Fram filters, so which is best for the 2.7 TD 1995

There are lots on ebay, but you get what you pay for I guess.
I learnt that when I bought a "Cheap" fuel filter, wouldn't seal so I scrapped it, bought an expensive Nissan one, thought I had wrecked the truck with loads of white smoke.
Neighbours thought we had a new pope.:lol
Thanks,
best regards, Rustic

Just following on from rustics post "whats the best make of oil" for a 95 maverick 2.7td. I too like fram but they seem to be harder to get now, its all chinese crap available here in Stoke at the local motor factors.......

hi Rustic i get i get mine from ebay.. service kit. all filters in one box..

I find the patrol much easier:naughty

Place large BnQ bucket under the sump:thumb2 no need for a jack or axel stands, even for a fat bloke!!
Remove sump plug!!
Lift up the bonnet.
Plenty of access to both oil filters!:thumbs
Put on new filters.
Remove almost full bucket of oil and pour into fuel tank!!
Refit sump plug!
refil with 9.5L of oil
job done:D
