:clap :thumbs

I often wondered what the gear box looked like from above.:thumbs

The LR series II the gear box came out through cabin, only bolts to undo remove bench seat, no carpets to spoil.

i did the same on the xj jaguars, i had to replace the hand brake pads and you were supposed to drop axle, not likely, air chisel and cut a square out above the axle, changed pads and made up a bigger plate and screwed in on, :thumb2

excellent, a useful and informative post. I will be removing my gearbox using this method tomorrow. Now then, where's me hacksaw....

Spent most of today removing the gearbox, not by the method above. Preferring instead to revert to the traditional 'follow the instructions in the manual' method.
Not very helpful is it ?
If anyone is changing their box, my advice is - Get someone else to do it.

If you are going to do it yourself, good luck getting the starter motor off ! Lucky for me I'm breaking the car, as I had to remove the inlet manifold to get to the inner bolt on the starter.
Also lucky for me, someone came and cut the front panel off first thing this morning, so access from the front was a lot easier.
And luckiest of all, I had an engine hoist and two big jacks to get everything roughly in the right position. Still had to use my RB1 to get the box to drop out though.
The manual makes it all sound so easy, eg. "Remove the gear and transfer lever". Sounds simple, but you have to remove the centre console and centre front storage panel, the pull the carpets back, then remove the six bolts holding the metal cover over the gaiter, then pull the gear lever rubber back and wrestle not one but two circlips off. I couldn't work out how to get the transfer lever off so I left it on :nenau
Anyhoo I got the gearbox off (just as the buyer turned up) plus a load of other stuff in the process. "New" glow plugs and injectors for the Mav tomorrow :thumbs

Ive removed a few and the method detailed in the thread was by far the easiest though i wouldnt recommend it if you wanted to use the truck again.Ive tried the method in the book very difficult and the box is heavy to remove also tried removing the front diff and lifting the engine out first this takes ages my advise would be to by a fourtrak daihatsu had the sense to split the cross member holding the torsion bars thus making the gearbox removal easy whilst with the absence of a ridiculous sump the engine removes in about an hour

I had it ready to come out in about 2 hours (following the manual), the starter bolt took another hour at least, I mucked about getting some other stuff off as well, but most of the time was spent lifting the car, the engine, and the box, up and down to try and release it.
It finally came out when I gave it a full front kick from the seated position.
And that ain't in the manual !

Thats really good 2 hours ive never had problem with the starter though its accessed easily from under the wheel arch if you remove the rubber trim. All the ones ive removed
have been masticed to the engine for some strange reason making even more difficult also i find that the bell housing fouls the body. When i removed the one detailed in this thread it was pooring with rain so all the work was inside the car just removed the passanger door put engine crane in and lifted it out

What is the orange pipe/cable on the top of the transfer box, just up from the rear propshaft?
Is it the breather or is it an output from a switch?
