I notice the welder has what amounts to "sun glasses" for protection, whilst I side with him on accessibility for seeing the job, I think he may be risking his eyes from arc burn, but yes excellent welds, I can now only do that on the bench, Rick

Not just his eyes but any exposed skin like his face too. I was Tig welding at a company and ended up with a very sore burnt back of the neck and could not understand how. It was arc reflection from the welding screen behind me! :lol

At first site I was thinking he was doing something else then welding on this picture, but you guys are right.
Hoping for the guy he doesn't do al his jobs like this.

As you were boys!!!!

Those are specialist welding sunglasses, if you look very closely at the sides you will notice that they are built around into the arms to prevent glare from each side.

There's a lad at work got a set a similar colour to the ones Ferdi's Welder mate is using there. They are by a company called Uvex, I'm sure they are prescription too and bloody expensive!!!!!! Luckily for him work foot the bill :sly

That explains :)

On another story, the dog and I went on a small "adventure"
In the Ford Focus he starts puking, but in the Terrano the little men looks in front and doesn't get sick even when the road gets a bit rough.

After the old radio died a couple of weeks ago it was time for some new incar entertainment:

Same radio as I put into the Focus last year, nothing really fancy but gives a good clear sound and does support bluetooth.

Since 2 weeks the rear foglight is failing.
So far replaced the bulb and put a new relais (the big blue one) in to check if the old one was faulty.

Any other thoughts? Think it happened since the last time with the trailer behind the car and checking the foglights of the trailer.

Check that you haven't got a short between your towbar socket wiring and where it's spliced into your loom

Nog yet, in the end I didn't had the time today to check it.
Hopefully later this week. One of the things I did manage to do was cleaning the shed so I can work on the truck again instead of working on it on the driveway.

That's still graft mate and it's graft that matters!!!

I'll be updating my CCTV install thread later :sly

Finally gonna have a look this saturday, planned some free time so finally we are going to fix this.

Thanks! Gonna start over there since the relays is new and it started after testing the trailer lights the last time.

Well due to the lack of time and when I had it the back of the Terrano was covered in mud so still no working foglight.

Early next year a nice bit of kit will arive, a Monster Cooling electrical fan to replace the old viscous one that is failing.
After reading a lot of stories I want to convert it into electrical.
The fan comes with a complete kit, but I've already ordered a different thermostat so I don't have to drill holes into the radiator or other parts of the cooling system.

Will look forward to reading all about it. For the moment settle down and enjoy the Christmas break with friends and family :thumbs

Around christmas I did order some parts and last week most of them dropped in.

Most important the fan and today was the day to change the old with the new.
After a cup of coffee I did lay out the wiring, since that is the part I'm having the most problems with this helps me a lot:

Then a picture of a battery clamp I couldn't use.
The Terrano has an extra wire clamped and this one can't do the trick. Will be ordering the right one soon.

Then it was time to go to the shed where I did park the truck the evening before. Removed the radiator and the old fan and the front part of the viscous coupling.
The second part is compressed to the belt bearing so couldn't remove that one.
After this I test fitted my new fan, but it was just 2 mm's to thick to fit in the space I had planned :doh
So it was time for plan B. But...just one more picture of the old vs the new one:

Right, new fan in place:

After the first plan failed I moved it a bit to the side, orriginaly I wanted it to be in the center so the old shroud would fit like a glove.
Now my plan is to make it fit again.

When everything was fitted back and it was time for the wiring.
No pictures since my focus was to big :lol
The Monster Cooling fan has an option to place a switch in between as well as an override, so to check my work I made a small bit of wiring to check if everything would work okay and luckily it did!

Removed the switch again and put everything nice into it's place.
Also my plan was to fit a thermostat I could put on the desired temperature, but again plan B since it hasn't arrived yet and there was a fixed one with the fan.
Goes on at 82 degrees Celsius so that is fine as well.

After installing the thermostat I filled everything back up again and started to change the inlet hose of the turbo.

Takes no time to change, but finding a new one for a decent price does...

This was the old one, the new one hasn't got a crack in the place where the tape is on this one :naughty

After this I did a quick testrun in the back yard and was releived the noise was gone and the engine did respond like it used to, or even a little bit better :)

Got a lunch and afterwards I did 20 miles of testing and had to bleed the coolingsystem twice, but finally result:

Needle right in the middle and it didn't came of it again.

My testing included:
- city traffic
- highway speeding and more
- 4x4
- slow driving with a lot of stops and a heavy trailer behind the truck

After testing the fan kicked in for about 5 seconds when I killed the engine so that is perfect!
For now I am a happy man again

After a couple 100 of miles we can say something about the switch to an electric fan :)

Engine has more bite, feels more lively and is more responsive in the low rpm.
More silent, also on a constant speed.

So far the cooling is more then sufficient, but I still want to reshape the old fan shroud to fit with the new fan.

O and I think I can manage a couple of miles more out of a gallon of diesel as well
