Well just found some time to fit the A bar that I got before Christmas. Main bolts go through the towing eyes, so I had to remove the recovery hook. Looks like the previous owner did a modification, welded two metal straps which go through the bumper vents and onto the cross member. There is no way that I could see that I could get anywhere near to the strap ends to drill them. They need to be bent so that they go over the bumper a bit anyway. I can see a captive thread one near each of the head lights, but there is no way that I could get to them. I don't want to remove the radiator just to fit an A bar.

Getting dark and cold, so I gave up and took it off again and refitted the recovery hook.

The sticker on the bar says, T2 10/99 onwards. Typ: R20/R24

How is it meant to fit on? Any help would be great.

Can't help, I am afraid. Mine mounts totally differently. It actually uses the same bolt holes as the recovery hook at the bottom, meaning you can then put the hook back on with the bar in place.

At the top, as mine was from a Mistral, I had to mod it, removing the lugs for the bracing bars, as they fowled the bumper, and adding my own bracing bars to the spot lamp mounts instead. I did have to remove the radiator grill to add Tee Nuts to the cross member, as again, mine would not reach out to the fixings near the horns.

Mine actually bolts through the front of the bumper. However I've also still have use of the recovery hook. I found even with the two bottom bolts in its still very sturdy. Any chance you could do away with the top mounts in anyway

if its any help , this is how they are fitted at the factory :nenau

Looks different fitting to mine, I have a Y 2001.

That's different to mine as well, never seen that big bar across the bottom before. The A bar looks just like mine though, in that the upper bracing fitting goes side ways through where the number plate is.

Mine bolted through that tow hook too. Took mine off tho as I bent it laning.

Any idea how I can fit this, bearing in mind I can't fabricate anything?

If not, it will have to go up for sale.

How does it supposed to fit?

Did it have any other fixings or just the two bottom towing eye bolts? I'd just worry that it would tilt forward without any other fixing points.

Rick - how can I fit this bar ?

You just need to make a couple of straps for the top support by the sounds of it.
A bit of 30x5mm flat bar, hacksaw and a drill is all you need to make up a couple of brackets.

have a weekend holiday on the south coast , and pop in to see rick :thumb2

Put some pic's up as that'll help loads:thumb2

See the Photobucket link on the first post :augie

It has got blobbed on straps, but I can't get to the ends to mount them :(

just taken some pics of the Mrs TDi mounts, 1st pic shows bottom fixing to tow eyes

Thanks for your time taking the pictures Rick.

Looks like the same bottom mounts on mine, although the drivers side seems bent to fit?

Passengers side...

Looks like a metal strap has been blobbed onto the tab that has a square hole in.

Just can't see how to get to where the straps are apart from removing the radiators :( Drivers side strap circled red.

Phew! I am all photo'd out :lol

Sorry Paff over looked your link:doh the bottom drivers side mount does look as if it's been bent so i'd just try & straighten it up the best you can, with the top ones if their to short i'd drill a hole in each bar & bolt on an extension bar which go's to where Rick's are mounted or to the lower cross bar under it:thumb2 If you wanted to hide that welded part you could fit some large heat shrink over it:thumbs

Looks like the strap curls round and bolts to support through the plastic bumper? So remove grille to get access??

From memory I think my tabs on the bar are not low enough
