Got a problem with the 3 litre, it’s difficult to select gears. It doesn’t matter if I’m stationary or moving. Often more changing down but not always and also throughout the gears not just one or two. Seems to be worse when warm. It’s not every time I change and select first to set off.
At first I wondered if there might of been a problem with clutch slave cylinder or pipes but appears not. I’m not sure about age of gear oil, thought about possibly changing it.

Any ideas appreciated.

Could be a cracked pedal assembly.
The spot welds break and the whole assembly moves so you don't get the full pedal travel.

Ive also heard that although the gearbox takes 3.5 litres of oil nissan recommends 5 litres and filling through the hole that the lever is fitted in.

Wondered if changing the oil would make life easier.

Will also have a good look at the pedal bracket tomorrow morning.

also had were the slave pipe is porous, doesn't leak as such but expands with the
pressure more easily than the slave moving with the motion.

I have had more of an occasional viewing rather than contributing membership for a few years due to a combination of factors (depression, family etc) and now hope as I am coming up to retirement that I can give more time to Terri.

The gear change on my 3Lt SWB (70,000 miles)is very temperamental, mainly smooth but it has spells where it is very crunchy and I have to crash it into gear. I have racked my brains and have not found any common reason for it to happen - hot/ cold, my bite point is fairly low but I have checked the clutch is definitely disengaged.

Any one who can remember back to when I posted more regularly, I had a lot of problems with my clutch/ crap garage, ending up with my entire system (master, slave, pipes, clutch plate, etc) changed only sorted when the mechanic followed the advice of one of the members on here (Banshee), and left a bit of play when setting up the clutch.

I have been meaning to ask about this and have even contemplated exchange gearbox etc, is there anything in the selector?, cotter pins? that could be causing a foul (not a chicken). My wife won't drive the car as it can be scary when setting off from stationary, right turn, roundabout, traffic lights, etc and the gears crash and won't engage.

There's a common problem with the Monaro & that is where clutch dust gets into the clutch fluid & this in turn makes it very difficult to get gears.
The secret is to suck out all that's in the reservoir, refill with fresh & do it often.
It's such a problem that Monkfish Performance supply a remote bleed kit special for the job.

When I collected my Monaro I didn't have a remote kit so I changed the fluid, pumped the pedal many times & repeated the process until I was happy.

Just an easy option that may be the cure :nenau

Hi RobN, hope you are well matey and don’t be worried about that black cloud matey there’s a couple of threads on here about that so you are not alone.

Back on subject, I’ve had chance to take another look this morning and gain a stiff neck.

The fluid looks clean in the reservoir, I do remember when my old truck flexi was leaking the fluid in the reservoir looked black.

I’ve had a look at the pedal bracket and goodness me I struggled a little to get my head in the correct place to see especially the top mounting and then my glasses wouldn’t let me focus. Have taken a couple of photos which show the top and bottom mounting. The top one looks like it could have a small crack about 7 o’clock not to be confused with a piece of fluff further up.

Can’t be sure if it is a crack or not in that last pic.

Here’s the lower mounting and the interesting thing is the bottom corner of the bracket is bent. Wonder if it has had this problem before? We did fit a replacement brass bush where the master cylinder attaches to the pedal.

easy enough job to remove and give a proper inspection.

if you unbolt the clutch master 2 nuts in engine bay then the pedal box should come out after removal of pin and r clip of clutch pedal :thumb2

Fixed

Fixed it today thanks to Banshee, cheers pal the bracket arrived today. The gear change is transformed, easy to select and no more crunching. It has surprised me that the cracks were causing all the problems.
For anyone reading this in the future it’s the top mounting bolt and I had to remove the lower dash panel to get better access though it was tight even with this removed.
The photo shows the top mounting of the underside of the bracket.

Thanks Jim, mine has been behaving lately but looks like I will be crawling into the foot-well this weekend.

I found better access removing the lower dash panel, careful with the mirror switch as they are very delicate. Also as Rick suggested press the clutch pedal as it gives better access too though I wasn’t clever enough to spot that.

Hopefully so Banshee but she may have to go next year to make way for a van to convert into a camper.
