Hi Guys
Had starting probs with SWB W reg 2000 Terrano 2 2.7 Intercooler (scoop on bonnet). Anyway, new battery bought, still no good. AA called out, traced to starter motor. Refurb starter motor arrived, took off knackered one (that was a job & half!!). Ran out of time to fit refurb one, but have a problem.
The refurb has a `half moon` shroud, my knackered one has a flat face.
Any ideas if they are compatable ??? :nenau

Many thanks

should be ok, there are two types but I recently got one for my 03 and it was flat faced - same as the one I was replacing. Usually you send the retailer the code from your old one, but if I remember correctly both types should fit.

what about the ones that turn the other way?

:jesterbg

You are correct guys. Should have cross ref part number. Will do that now, bit sleepy after 3 night shifts though !!
Thanks once again

When you say flat faced do you mean like this, as I have only ever seen these on petrol engines and the ones with the nose cone will not fit the petrol, Rick

Yup looks very much like it.
Have a nose cone starter to fit.
Will check part numbers on knackered and replacement part very shortly

Thanks for pic

Part number for replacement starter motor = 9 000 331 203 Bosch
Sadly cannot read starter number on knackered one, pipes in way.
Thanks

do not know about the numbers but I offered a nose cone starter from a TDi up to my spare petrol engine and not only will it not fit but bolt holes are off centre, so no chance, but as others have said they fit I can only guess that there is a different flat faced starter for the diesel, cncfabs should know, Rick

The diesel starter does have a dual personality. My old one was just the cogs but the newer ones have the shroud. Both fit :thumbs

looks like I will need to be more careful when looking for petrol starters then as it looks like there is a subtle difference not easily spotted, (I wrongly assumed that the flat faced ones only did the petrol) seems there are two types then, one for diesel and one for petrol but both a little different re mount hole positions, Rick

Thank you for your help guys.
Push started the truck yesterday and she fired up and ran for 40mins. Infact picked up my guitar tutor.
Will book into local garage, who are reasonable and very good to have replacement fitted.
Thank you once again

Well Rick, it's great that we, with all our Terrano / Maverick experience, still learn something new every day.:bow

Well every few weeks anyway...:lol:lol:lol

I would certainly expect the petrol and diesel ones to be different, they are totally different engines and the diesel would need to be heavier duty, due to the higher compression and maybe the petrol one a little faster, so gear ratios might be different.

Thanks for the advise guys.
Replacement fitted Sunday and all works well.
Took about hour and half to change......:clap

couple more goes and you will shave that time down to 15 mins like the rest of us :lol

You would then have 5 reverse gears and only one forward gear...:lol:lol

In fact, some of the very early single cylinder boat engines had to be started in reverse to allow the boat to go backwards or slow down.

The old timers could go from forward, to reverse as they stalled the engine and then it went the other way. Valve timing was a manual adjustment in those days.

These old engines had to be started using a blow lamp, no glow plugs in those days. imagine that... The paraffin blow lamp would have to be started using some meths first to help vaporise the paraffin.
Wouldn't have been many joy riders in those days...:lol:lol
No fast getaways...
