not sure what you mean by that, the test was done on the cog assembly prior to putting together with the starter, I am a little vague, as I was dressing armatures on a lathe at the time, what I do remember clearly was the tool to remove the screws holding the field coils in dynamos, stearing wheel sized handle to turn a large philips driver that had a foot pedal to put heavy pressure onto the driver into the screw while you used both hands on the steering wheel to undo the screw, Rick

:lol:lol When I was at Automobile Engineering collage, we had to do a project to show how a part of the engine worked. I was going to do the Dynamo, but someone else decided to do it, so I did the Windscreen wiper motor instead... anyway, the guy doing the Dynamo, wanted to undo one of those screws, to show the windings and was struggling. I was the resident SWAT, so he asked for my help, and I remember trying a large Screw driver with a square shaft, and a spanner on it, eventually progressing to an impact driver. We beat it so hard in the end, we distorted the dynamo case, so the armature would no longer fit back in, but never got that screw undone. In the end, we gave up, and decided someone must have welded them in... Now I know...:bow

Still waiting for a call off starter guy! Truck off road again till its sorted! Deffo starter as smoking like fook even after 1 crank of engine!! I know he wont charge me for new cog mechanism as that was new last week, but he checked all other componants and said they were fine! Can see me paying for a new one less the £45 that I paid him last week!! Wish I hadnt just paid the 100 quid for a new battery!! :banghead

I hope not, imagine the torque overcoming this lot, the bar would go over like a hammer, and the weights into orbit, after going through the roof.

As Rick says, a proper engineering method to accurately measure torque, Weight(force) x distance = torque..

Hence units of Torque... ft lbs or Newton Metres.
Where 1kg provides an approximate force of 10 Newtons. ( ok 9.81 Newtons for the scientists amongst you).

on big truck starters they used to use a clutch as in multi plate drive clutch think this was to enable powerfull starter to still spin a bit if engine was sluggish to turn when cold rather than instantly lock up and burn out windings, do not know if it is the same today, Rick[/QUOTE]

i concede, just never came across one, slipping (knacked) ones yes, probably before my time.
