Didn't go as planned....

Ok so today I went to change my engine oil. Warmed it up, and dumped a tin of flush in. As I always do, and then change it again in a K

Then I had fun trying to get the sump nut out... Bloody hell nothing would move it, so I had a lightbulb moment and took it down (complete with engine flush in the system, it said to fast idle it for 15 so i cant see it hurting it) the pikey mechanics open in town, and asked matey to crack it for me... He did crack it but the wrong one, he did the transfer case as I suppose he thought it was a sump key, and then he did it back up spanner tight, I was up in the car on the ramp, so could not tell him what he'd done wrong. And only found out when I got home

Luckily my uncle who is quite strong and smaller than me lol, got it loose. I then took over, and opened up the sump plug.... I scalded my hands and forearms and dumped 6l of thick black used engine oil on our drive.... Dad wasn't worried about the drive, more interested in bollocking me about how I could have done myself a proper damage, hands were a bit red and inflamed all day... And the fun did t stop there, the oil filter was impossible to get off, so I had to leave the old filter in and just top the oil up... Gonna try and do the filter tomorrow through the wheel arch?

On the positive side I found out I'd lost 14 stone since this time last year! First gym session went really well today also, so not all lost...

hey, next time, dont heat the oil up. I never have ever, on my other cars, and nver had a problem. Cant risk burning yourself!! Still, good job, I suspect you will have more luck with the oil filter through the arch-I havent done mine yet so let us know how you get on!

the oil filter is a pain to get off. I had to jam a screw drivers in mine. Now that I have done a body lift it's easier to get to so next one should be a doddle.

I hope your hands recover from this ordeal.
I remember changing the oil on my motorbike when I was young, The wrench slipped and my wrist slid down the very hot chromed exhaust, after 30 years, you can still see the scar if you look close.

Moral of the story, wait for a while for things to cool down :doh

When things start to go wrong, they escalate, now I always stop at the first hurdle and have a break, a cup of tea, a biscuit and just think it through, or even pack up for the day.

Errors are made when you're tired and you don't always think things through, I now wear latex gloves when doing oil changes as there is often an oil spill.
I also put a sheet of card board down to catch the odd splash, but not to stop 6 litres of old oil.... I guess you had a suitable container to collect the oil, but were unable to move it after the scalding with the oil.

The problem with these latex gloves is they get trapped when you are using a socket set on nuts and bolts, but do offer some protection from hot oil....

I once tried every tool I had to remove the oil filter, a strap wrench used to work, but on one occasion, I put on a latex glove and the filter just spun off.
So try the simplest first.

With reference to your weight loss, do you mean you have lost 14 lb, as 14 stone is just short of 2 cwt, approx 80kgs.

Still a good weight loss in a year, I wish...

Yes it will, and all the crud cleaned out of the oil ways:doh

So you need to do another oil change after the new filter...:doh
But you will have a super clean engine, at least on the inside..:thumb2

TIP
3/4 fill the new filter with new oil before fitting, this will save running the engine with no oil as the filter starts to fill with oil....

I doubt garages do this though.... But then again it's not their car.

I got a filter wrench from Halfords worked a treat on oil & fuel filters
On my mav I did it from above, did the fuel filter same way just removed the cable from the water thingy first
Cost about a tenner well worth it just like the price here also well spent:clap:clap

Dad bought me that very tool from halfords tonight! Gonna try and change it tomorrow and do the fuel filter. It's doing amazingly well on juice now thanks to the MAF clean etc!

hi, i find it easier to take the n/s wheel off pull off rubber cover and get at the filter that way, just place a bowl or rags under to catch it under neath.
