My dash lights work but the clock is dark, as my mav is 94 I guess it has a bulb, how do I get to it, or is it easier to use a torch at night:lol

Taking dash out looks a problem:doh

Mine has been the same for years,
Several optional solutions here though...

1 I use the Ford Radio, press MAN twice and up pops the time on the radio display.
2 In a residential area, press your horn 3 times....
"Who's making that ***** racket at 2 o'clock in the morning......."
3 Don't go out at night.

I might bite the bullet this week and replace the bulb, I could have done it 8 years ago... no great rush then.:doh

If you do it pictures please:bow

thanks for the radio tip:clap

It has been done before by others on the site, but you go in from the front and take care with wires and plugs, after all you don't want to reassemble it and find 2 others have gone....

Oh I remember now, why I didn't change the lamp 8 years ago.......:nenau

I am still waiting for another bulb to blow. :doh
Good excuse that :thumbs

flip wait ages then 3 come along at once.

yep the display on my mk4 has just got darker.

think i had 2/3s lit, well now have 2/3s in dark!

can sort of see last couple of digits of odo and
trip, but forget seeing temp and time.

which is fine except be handy to know how cold
it is on a cold dark night.....

We have a volunteer to tackle the job and explain to the rest of us how it's done? :thumb2

Plank - did you ever change those bulbs ? Seems like I have the same problem ....

Looking at the LED kits.

no, mine is like that but it's the other side of the LCD display that is dak.

Don't know about the later dash cluster like your's Plank but the early dash cluster is dead easy to remove and replace the bulbs. I simply bought ordinary bulbs for about £3 to do the lot of them. I'm no skilled mechanic and shy off most jobs these days but this one took less than half an hour for me. Very pleased the speedo cable wasn't a reach around the back and twist job, simply place cluster back and tighten screws.

cheers Jim, I hope mine is as easy. good point about changing the lot while you have the dash apart :thumb2

From the photo's I also think most LED's don't seem to give an even light and no faffing about getting + and - correct way round with bulbs. I think it's called KISS:lol

Some info on the bulbs from the dealer parts dept ( they are very helpful here). There are three different types of bulb in the dash - remembering mine is a 2004 facelift.
Three behind the LCD display are 13.5 V 0.56 W - clear with a blue cap.
One each behind the tacho, speedo and between the temp / fuel gauges (three bulbs total) are 3W clear with a black cap.
Two above LCD display and three down right side (total 5 bulbs) are 1.4 W clear with a brown cap.
There is apparently a complication with the 3W ones - there are two types - one with straight contacts and one with offset contacts and if you fit the wrong one they don't work. Also you don't know which you need til you get them out :(
. I will post an image of the print of the layout when I get home.
If I got the full set from the dealer and needed offset contacts they quoted £85 :lol :lol  ...... They said try somewhere else and looked embarrassed.

If your LED's produce one bright spot behind the panel then flatten the top using coarse emery or sand paper, you should be able to remove the curved part, if you leave the surface rough, you will get softer illumination.

Experiment with different grade emery or wet and dry.
Don't over do it as you can damage the actual semiconductor, but taking off 2mm shouldn't be a problem. Hold the LED by the body, not the legs or base.

I did this on my back lights to my boat instruments and they are far better.
I bought a whole bag of White LED's and chose my own resistor value.

Best regards, Rustic

Hi Jim. Can you remember what sort of bulbs they are, my '94 T2 clock one is also u/s, but it's in Spain and I would like to take a couple when I go over next month.
Cheers
Bruce

Hi Bruce, they are tiny cap less bulbs. the end is flat with a leg of wire at either side. Say's the following on the box.

CETA BU286 T5
12V 1.2W W2*4.6D and says E4 inside a box.

Think it's the T5 bit that denotes the type of bulb. I've used them in Vauxhall's over the years so not uncommon.

Brilliant - thanks for that Jim.

When I worked for dealers I always found it strange that nissan felt the need to sell the bulb and holders. Bulb comes out of holder and new one goes in when you replace them in the real world. Replaced all mine at the same time with the pack of bulbs that I bought and don't have any brightness issues with any of the warning lights. Like the way you'r dealer will give you a printout like that.
