I'm starting to dislike this car like no other banger I've ever owned.
I took out the Crank Position Sensor, it was clean, but I gave it a good wipe over anyway, reconnected it, played about cleaning and reseating the two earth cables on the battery side of the engine.
Amazing result, no EMI lights, pulled at full power, no engine dying on me in traffic.
This lasted a week. Then came back with a vengeance. I couldn't drive any distance without the engine surging or running with reduced power (or stopping dead).
I put an earth lead from the connectors on the engine block to the battery. Miracle cure again. This lasted a few days, so I made up a heavy duty earth lead from an old welding earth cable. The old T2 ran like a dream... for three weeks. Now its intermittent.
I've been trying to get a new CPS for this car, but I can't get one new from any of the shops I know. Even breakers are saying that all they have is the one from the rear of the engine. Mine fits on the front. One I was offered has a rectangular connector, mine has a more rounded one.

Was advised that CNCFABS might be able to help, but I haven't been able to get in touch.

Slowly loosing the will to live.

All's I will say is stick with it.
I have had mine a very long time, granted it hasn't got all the sensors that the later ones have.

Earth problems are a problem with any car, also the positive battery lead clamp can become open circuit, making it difficult to start.

The CPC has caused a few problems, but other others have got around that, and I'm sure they will be along shortly.

There are a few posts on earthing, a few on battery clamp failure.

The main issue with these trucks is loss of power above 2000 rpm, which is often down to a faulty, or simply dirty MAF. Plenty of posts on that too.

I don't think you have a problem that hasn't ocurred before and has been cured and the Terrano lives for another day, like I say, stick with it.
Collectively we know more about these trucks than all the Nissan dealers put together.

Best regards,
Rustic

I intend to get to the bottom of it. This is a great car for my dogs and for being out in the sticks where I live. When it goes well, I love it. I'm just not keen on not knowing what to try next.
I want to replace the CPS with a new one anyway, so that will rule out the error codes I get.
I have sussed out the quality of this site, which is why I paid my dues. :)

S/h ones will simply degrade over time. I think they work on a kind of electromagnetic field or summut. Anyway s/h won't help usually.I also remember that they get worse when hot. However you can get them from ford or nissan stealers .
I do have saved somewhere that there's another car that uses the same sensor. When I get home I'll see if I still have the link :thumbs

there are two types of sensor, one with a rounded connector, one with square.

I did a lot of research into this when mine went wonky and the ONLY place I could get the correct one, was from Nissan at £198.

MOst factors supply the wrong one, as you need the correct product code for your year of car....

Did I see a post a month or so ago suggesting an audi cps was a good replacement?
Or was I dreaming zzzz

Cheers guys. That Audi sensor fix looks cheap. I read about it somewhere as well. What about changing the connector? Anyone know the wiring combo of both the Audi and the Terrano?
I'm going to get one anyway. Better that than 200 quid right away.

My daughters 1998 Fiesta was playing up, it would over rev when changing gear, stall at junctions and was being a pain in the rear.
After reading different forums about these issues, I bought a can of electrical contact cleaner and sprayed every connector plug that went to any component in the engine bay that I could get to, I then disconnected the battery for 20 mins to reset the ECU and when I started the engine, I left it to tick over for 10 mins and 2 weeks on, the car is running like a dream.

The problem with this though....and I have done similar things, you will never know where the original problem was, and will mean you will have to follow the same process to fix it should it happen again. Might not be a big deal though...:augie

A bit like in the old 70's engines, replacing the spark plugs, points, plug leads, plug caps, condenser, coil, distributor cap, rotor arm just to get rid of a misfire.
Something that many of us have done lol...

I'll let you know if she phones up moaning again, if it starts doing it again, but for now, she's a happy girl and it's a £5 fix for now ;)
