On the attached video, a Jeep Cherokee can be hacked via cell phone connection and a laptop.

Everything the driver can do can be over ridden by a hacker, including steering, brakes, speed, even what's on the radio, and even pictures on the display.

The driver can not do anything about it....

Scary big time...

Scaremongering by the media, filling up empty space between the adds.
Most (I'd say well over 99%) of cars cannot be hacked this way, for the simple reason they do not connect to anything outside the car.
In the story mentioned here the Jeep was connecting to the internet with an access module only ever sold in the USA.
Of course, they do not mention how many attempts it took to connect to that car - most likely the hackers had physical access to the car before, so they could establish all the data on its internet connection: IP address, MAC address, brand of network cards used, operating system (if any)...

So, in short: don't worry if you drive a T2. And don't worry if you drive anything else - I have yet to encounter a modern car in which the entertainment system doesn't break down after a few months.

I agree unless the car has some kind of connectivity to the outside world such as a wireless connection or mobile phone type connection for data then no chance. Rustic even our Skoda's are safe:thumbs

You wait, the "modding" boys will be wrapping their off-road toys in tin foil now,

"Just in case "

:doh

Not the same, but there are lots of newish Transit vans having tools stolen, with no signs of forced entry. The Police say the keys are being copied remotely and then used to open the doors later. A couple of our fleet have been done like this.

For fear of wandering back into the other thread where we discussed this...

again, modern vehicles (Transit's), built down to a price, not up to a standard.

:doh

Sadly anything transmits information whether its your key plip, bluetooth, wireless, mobile phone, cb, walkie talkie 446 absolutely anything is open to being "hacked" and the way Ive used the term means transmission interecpted/heard by a third party.

Nothing transmitted is 100% safe from being hacked in one shape or another.

These reports must be taken in context too, when theres nothing going on in the world they have to put something in the news.

No point hacking the locking system on the average terrano cos there isnt much money to be made.
A tranny van with the possibility of something valuable inside is a different matter.

Ford focus ST's are getting pinch left right & centre in under a minute:doh but can't see it happening with Terrano's god we even struggle to get fault codes from the plug let alone try & start it:lol to many have push button starts where the has to be in your pocket etc so no wonder they are getting pinched as manufactures are making it easy for thief's
