No is the simple answer! I'd decided if I got a petrol vehicle I was going to go for the lpg option as I usually keep my cars a while and do loads of miles. My understanding is lpg aint the best for diesels like the one I now own.

Masterplans or what

Having a look at the other oils options I fond the first one but looking at the second, the price is good but I'm not sure about just having one fuel on board :?

I'll keep looking I just wondered what experience anyone on here had had with the cooking oil option.......its definitely attractive price wise 8)

Thanks Paul, I may have a trip to Tesco's this week. Its too good to miss in my opinion.

Its me really I like to have things pinned down ( as on the original post ) with a neat clean little switch over sytem. 8)

I've been all over the internet trying to find out about duty payable (or not) on cooking oil as a road fuel.

My understanding is that so long as you dont use more than 2500 litres a year you dont pay tax. You do need to retain "evidence" of this.

Am I correct? can anyone confirm or correct? my heads about to pop :?

Hello Daved,
You can produce and use up to 2500 litres per annum for personal use without paying any duty or taxes to the Government.

Mav.

Cheers Mav -welldone-

Everyhwere I've looked its a case of "an indivdual can but subject to...." and "if you are a private producer but not subject to the regs of subsection 1 para 3b......." typical HMRC double speak!!!!!

I'm off to Tesco's. I reckon if I lob in 5 to 10 litres a week to start with, mixed with the diesel at each fill up and see how I go mechanically speaking

Just been to supermarket and cheapest oil in Morrisons was £1.17/L - I'm only paying £1.10/L for Bio - unlss you can get a really cheap supply of oil its just not worth the bother/risk.

Youve just pre empted my next question

I've been into Asda this afternoon and admittedly only a small bottle but the largest they had was 3 litres and it was £3.40 ish. As normal bog standard from the pump diesel is around £1.21 a litre it doesnt seem worth the effort, unless of course you work on the basis that if some garage dropped the price per litre by 3p theyd be very busy :?

Anyway, the quest goes on  next stop Makro.

Anyone else got any ideas for sources :?:

I've got an Asda credit card, if you use it at there forecourt you get 2p per ltr off. Well that was the promotion on the card when I got it, so you get 2p off there marked price. Check first.

Tony

Hi Daved,

At one time it was worth buying cooking oil, I used it in the wife's peugeot 306, at the time it was 50p a litre at Aldi and Lidl but Makro was dearer and it was always cheaper by the litre and not in the 20ltr drums as you would think, but cooking oil has gone very expensive and has not dropped like diesel has lately.

rustygates,

Dave,

For new oil (SVO) you need to shop around. My most reliable source was Asda who sell bulk 15 litre cubies of Soya for about £17.40 which worked out at 97p/l from what I remember. Bought two a couple of weeks ago. Keep an eye out for special offers. Waitrose had a deal on their online ordering a while back with £15 off each of your first two orders if over £50. So I ordered some of their own brand rape seed oil. Worked out at 80p/l and the delivery man probably gained a hernia delivering 30x2 litre bottles

As Mav mentioned the limit is 2500l per year per 'producer'. So you should keep records of what you put in the tank in case HMRC stop and want evidence but how would they know? But this is the HMRC, and they can make up their own rules....? When I say producer it mainly relates to bio production so one home producer/processor can manufacture 2500l max. All duty and VAT free for road vehicle use. But if you go over (or plan to) duty etc. is payable on the whole lot  In the case of SVO road vehicle use is assumed once it goes into the tank.

I see what you mean about the ease of using the twin tank method and a lot of vehicles do use it but the 2.7IDI engine seems very resiliant and I have not found a need to. Though I may eat my words one day?

As above. Take a look on that forum and log in. Loads of info and they are helpful. There are a couple of know-it-alls but generally they are a good bunch and willing to help once you have read the 'read me' links at the start of the forum.

Cheers,
Paul

Thanks for the link, I'd not stumbled across them yet.

A glance through the clasifieds and suppliers "spare methanol for sale" 8O not something you see everyday. Can be nasty stuff, no way am I getting into production.

cheers

The use of Methanol only relates to biodiesel production and I am avoiding that and bio production for both safety and green reasons. Plus it's whole heap of hassle compared to my hands free WVO processor 8)

A Methanol fire/explosion is not something I want in my underground garage 8O

Just been into tescos, on offer 10litres of veg oil £7.99. Accepting diesel (as it is around our way) @ £1.22 a litre, I'm saving £1.91 per gallon in old money.......

Yep, I would agree and thats the plan for next time. I've just put another 6 litres or so in and its somewhere near full. Been for a drive and it seems to be running just fine.

Cant make my mind up if the exhaust smells a bit hot wok ish or not  mind you at a saving of nearly £7 on that one fill its not to be sniffed at -rotfl-
