Convert Auto to Manual

1995 mistral 2.7td (terrano2)
Auto box seems to be shot, despite very low milage, it is going in for diagnostic on tuesday.
Due to the shortage of auto boxes I am wondering if converting the car to manual would bring long term benefits in terms of reliability.
Any thoughts/advice on this? links to write ups on it being done before?

mine had only done 80,000 miles before it failed , but i suspect some of that was due to lack of atf .

it may not be terminal , many things can affect its operation , it has many sensors etc, have you cleaned the filter in the bottom of the box for example ? .changed atf ? checked colour of fluid ? , made sure that the level on the dipstick is at the bottom of the dipstick when cold ? , just a few things to check first .

just studied that link, but that is for a different model. 95 mistral does not have a lamp on the mode switch and the dash is different to the one illustrated.

my mode switch is mounted to the left of the steering wheel ( you cant see it in that pic ) and is marked " power " and " hold "

yes mine on left too, alongside fog/driving lamp switch, mines marked

no lamp, but a bit furher on in the diagnostic instructs there is a view of the left side of the dash, all the w/l's you and I have are in view ARROUND the left of the speedo, think its the newer model.
reading through I hope it will be a blocked pickup guaze but not too optimistic. I do hear a high pitched buzzing noise under the car when moving backwards, coasting or driving - thought it was the brakes binding but I have jacked her up and turned both wheels backwards and not heard the noise.

im sure someone will discuss whether you can change from a auto box to a manual box , personally i dont think so because the auto box is physically bigger , and serious mods would need to be made i think , also im not sure about the bell housing size .

auto to manual

Hi I have converted other vehicles from Auto to manual and you will need a donor vehicle or a very understanding local breakers.

If you remove the manual box your self you can keep all the relevent nuts bolts and washers etc and do a job lot deal for all required

List of items to consider:

the gear box, mounts and possibly the speedo cable
fly wheel and clutch plates etc (thrust bearing and fluids)
pedal box, clutch pipes and master cylinder
centre consul for a manual gearstick

starter motor (not sure if an auto and manual are the same)
possibly the propshafts may be required


I would think that the brake rod and servo should bolt straight up

Plus if the gearbox is second hand how do you know if the gear box is good as they are a known issue with the terrano.
If the gearbox is OK now how long will it last?

All in all will come top a few quid.

should be relatively easy to fit if you have all the parts

Might want to consider a recon or getting your one done

hi,almost all of our mistrals over here are auto,havent seen a manual one yet,one mod most of the auto shops recomend is fitting an oil cooler for the trans,alot of our mistrals are pre intercooled pre factory trans cooler,cheers

should know more Tuesday and be in a position to weigh up pro's and con's
Transmission oil cooler, my mistral has one! I was following the lines to it when I found the dipstick the importers mechanic told me I did not have!

hi,yes re trans cooler i meant to say an aftermarket type,im having one fitted to mine in the next few weeks,trans has been rebuilt,just under nz$2500 and i want to tow a small caravan auto shop advised aftermarket cooler ,were did you find your dipstick cheers pete

its between the back of the cylinder head and the bulkhead, well hidden, dont forget to check the level with the engine running and up to operating temp
