It’s only a code RED cos I need my truck for Scotland in 4 weeks time!

I was seeing oil from my swivel hub, and I replaced the inner axle seal with a Milner seal (£12) two weeks ago. Bugger, absolutely pouring out from behind the wiper blades after a short drive.
Stripped the hub/stub axle down again and removed the half shaft and this time I fitted a Nissan seal at a cost of £25.
New seals were seated well and the right way round!
Cleaned everything down, careful with installing the drive shaft passed the Nissan seal and hey-ho all assembled and it’s pouring out again.
I am stumped.
Throw any questions at me chaps.
I’ve got to get this sorted pronto.
Best
Davey

Am I right in saying there is an entire kit for these, both inner and outer. I think Neil just done his didn't he. He might have some ideas.

Might have to get the whole kit for both sides. Terrain Tamer are supposed to be top marks and might be on the shelf from West Coast Offroad

Hi Martin
Thanks...
I’ve done these a few times before and no probs.
I’ve been chatting to Neil (Wheelie) and he’s stumped as well.
The only component that holds oil back in the axle is this seal,
Before I ripped out the Milners seal to replace it I observed it was perfect.
Fitted the Nissan one any way.
I’m wondering all sorts.
The shaft is in A1 condition as you’d expect sat in an axle tube covered with diff oil.
The seating of the new seal is fine, having used a perfectly matching socket as a drift.
The whole job has been clean and tidy, start to finish.
Davey Boy stumped.

Have you checked your breather isn't blocked?

If it is the axle could be pressurising just enough to blow the seals:nenau

Have to say I've never had issue with Milner seals.

That is a point i hadn’t considered Rob. Thanks
I’ve only driven the truck 2 miles from re-assembling.
Worth a check in any case.
Milners have sent me wrong seals before, but the that was a picking issue.
I used Musashi brand on the Pajero main engine output seal and that failed within a month.

I think Robs suggestion re blocked breather is about the best one, but odd that it is only one side leaking, the only other thing I can come up with is a crack in the casing, Rick

Not sure when you call them swivel hubs if you at the front end or the rear?

Either way if there is movement in the bearings / drive output shafts then even a new seal will leak, I had this on an old Mini with oil pouring out of the front gearbox seal. The bushes had gone so a new seal cured it for a couple of miles only.

Good suggestions one and all.
I’ll inspect the casing and check for any play on bearings and shafts.

After further inspection, this could be the cause of my problem!

The bottom king pin bearing on the swivel hub.
This would make sense of the extra movement of the driveshaft through the seal then letting my oil through. What Mac was alluding to.
Will get a rebuild kit on order and put a couple of evenings in this week and that should do it hopefully!
My expensive Nissan seal seems in good order so fingers crossed that’ll stay in for the rebuild.
I’ve checked over the casing/axle tube Rick and all seems well.:thumb
Will check that my diff breather is clear to Rob.

Ahh I was assuming the bearings were all good :doh

Yeh that'll do it dude!

Wow how come you missed that on two strip-downs? yes that will cause your oil leak, a tip here as did mine a little while ago, it probably had shims top and bottom that may have been removed to counter wear, if so you may find your new bearings too tight, i did as there were no shims in mine, I have a roll of shimming material so made some temporary which allowed me to determine what thickness I needed and subsequently ordered them from Nissan, not a stock item bye the way which made them expensive for what they are, so be warned, Oh and if you will be wading with temp shims seal the gaps with sealant, Rick

Glad you found the problem. I would still want the full rebuild kit for both sides. Terrain Tamer as I said is about the best out there by all accounts.

I just went for the obvious Rick. When the oil was still getting by, that's what made me look deeper.
There were no clues driving the truck that told me the bearing was the culprit and in such bad condition either.:nenau

Thanks for the tip on shims. I still have some.

I would ordinarily rebuild both sides Martin, but I have never been so pushed for the time available to do the job.:doh
I'm currently working in Cornwall, then back to Hampshire for an installation.
I'm repairing the offending side to be able to take part in Ten Tors and then off to Scotland then in for MOT when we get back!
I really am looking forward to July when I know things will calm down a bit.:thumb2

I rebuilt the swivals 3 times before getting it right, they can be very fussy. The problems I had was same as you, swivel bearings, causing shaft seal to leak within a month and not having the correct tool to do up the wheel correctly with preloading, causing the wheel bearings to fail within 6 months.
Got my kits from Milners and was very pleased with the quality, when I sold it they had been leak free for about a year and a half.

Kind regards

Russell.

I fitted this total rebuild kit four years ago.
Just a real pain being so busy to start leaking oil big time.
My new parts arrived this week, so tomorrow afternoon it's back onto the truck and get this issue wrapped hopefully.:thumb2

Good Luck to you Davey mate :thumb2

Sounds like a nightmare of a job, I know my brother had a similar issue with his Jimny
