well yesterday the gears decided they didn't want to go in anymore, after an inspection i found the slave was leaking, replaced it today and bled it but peddle won't come back up, bled both slave and master, any ideas?

adjuster on your master cylinder?.....I put a pic up eyons ago...I'll go find it
unless your flexi is away too....take it you've block your dampner?

yea all that was done years ago, the adjuster has been looked at it snot that, it was fine til i put the new slave on, even with the knackered slave the pedal was still nearer the top than it is now

When me and Rick bled my clutch recently the pedal would stay planted to the floor for ages, I was pumping away and he was bleeding for ages... Eventually it came to life... Took a long time... The joys of bleeding, any technician will tell you, sometimes a bleed can take 2 minutes, or sometimes 2 hours if air is trapped badly :thumb2

If it was returning before and now it's not... Either bleed needed or incorrectly adjusted :thumb2

try bleeding the reverse order you did it initially, worked for me, & only open the valves enough to get the job done

same happened to mine, Richo. Took a while to bleed, but eventually came to life.

When I had to do a roadside repair on my old tdi when the damper gave out, it took me a couple of attempts to bleed the system.

got the pedal back to where it's supposed to be but still got no selectable gears, going to order a new master cylinder :( hope thats the problem

Still could be a bad bleed, pedal will return at a certain point. Or hose on slave could be shot with an internal area of fluid building when pressing pedal, like a channel in the wall of hose.

its not a bad bleed, hose is fine i took it off and checked it

Get another person to press the pedal while you look under at the slave cylinder, it should move the arm around 20 to 25 mm if it does then your clutch has gone, if it does not then hydraulics, Rick

Yep, also check for swelling ect, I was actually referring to a chamber inside the hose, eg, if the hose inner wall had perished so every time you pressed down it would push fluid inside a "flap" thus not reaching the piston for the gearbox arm.

managed to get the pedal to come back to the top, can just get it into gear but the bite point is right near the top, so master changed and slave changed, i reckon its the clutch, at least it will all be new :( Rick i did the check you mentioned and it only moved about 10mm but that was when the pedal wasn't returning all the way up, will check again.

Alex, what's the process to bleed the clutch?

My bite point is terrible and I want to see if a bleed makes any difference

you can adjust the master cylinder to change the bite point :thumbs

I've ordered a new clutch, should be here for monday

my clutch bites high, almost at end of clutch travel, how do you adjust? may cure my prob, may not but worth a go before ordering a new clutch

the end that goes through the bulk head and attaches to the clutch peddle is adjustable

correctly adjusted you should have about 15 to 20 mm of free pedal before it starts to push the master, assuming your fulcrum pin bush is not worn, if it is you will have a little more free play, the important thing is to have some free play, Rick
